well said
i feel like we’re a few years away from that dream like vision of a truly free game and i’m sure rockstar will be the ones to do it
but for now i still think an immersive story is the best way to approach video games and like u said it involves a good amount of « hand holding »
i think mgs v against its predecessors is a good example of this tension between a great narrative and great gameplay
it has the best gameplay of the series no doubt but it’s obvious it had to sacrifice a lot of story. a lot of people just blamed it on industry drama and that’s real. but at the same time i don’t think people have enough empathy to the dev team who had to figure out how to make this clunky spy game with tons of lore translate into a modern video game experience. i feel like they did really well with the big expectations.
what’s most interesting about that game is that it actually integrated player choice with narrative with the casssette tapes. it was done really well, it’s obvious why he picked a big movie star and the best voice actors in the industry. the cassettes are really good and have a great incentive to make players find them and listen to them since there’s not many cutscenes. also so many people hated the long cutscenes !
i just don’t think players understand what they really want from video games.
yes
you telling me i was playing 4 in 18 FPS back then
f***ing loved that game as a kid
Legit, it can go up to 60fps when you're facing a wall or whatever, 40fps if it gets more complex, but most action brings it down to about 20fps
Horizon Zero Dawn ain’t totally doing it for me
It is a great game, but I never got why it was regarded as like a masterpiece. It’s a cool world and really tight gameplay, but it didn’t break ground or anything.

holyyyy f*** the accuracy of this post is mind blowing
and mfs eat that s*** up and call it the GOAT
95% of games are mediocre and not worth playing
Examples of the 5%?
Mario is the best gaming series of all time
Entire industry would be in a different place if he didn't feel so damn good to control
Sidescrolling 2D platformers that don't handle like Pitfall? Thank Mario
Being able to freely control the camera in a 3D environment? Thank Mario
Almost every gen a new Mario game comes out and changes the platforming game, Odyssey is my personal fave, it's probably the most purely fun game I've ever played

3d mario are some of the best, smoothest, (mostly) no bullshit games ever made
it's just so much fun and freedom for any kind of player, if ur a beginner or a veteran
the balloon world mode in odyssey was the most clever multiplayer for it too, ur encouraging players to push that sweet movement to its limits and get creative with the world
yikes
Only nostalgia & its online advancements mean anything.
As a person with a game collection from snes to now, its the most overrated & in the moment gen so far.
BOTW is overrated af, no doubt a great game but an okay zelda game. TP > OoT just by a lil bit tho. playing Link's awakening got me reminiscing the good ol zelda
Examples of the 5%?
Even 5% is a lot theres so many games out there but games like Persona FF Mgs Zelda etc
Fortnite is still fun and one of the most important games of this century
Don't think it's that fun but it's undoubtedly one of the most important games ever. Basically mainlined battle royale games into the mainstream and changed the industry through their F2P model.
Sleeping Dogs is extremely mid. Only redeemable aspect of the game is the melee combat. Only paid like $8 for it and I still want my money back
Yakuza 0 is a good game, but I don't see myself ever playing a Yakuza game again
Persona 5 is overrated. I wish they established firm rules for how the metaverse works, it felt like there were too many deus ex machina moments explained away with "cognition", "change of heart" or whatever. The game also drags on for far too long
Hella unnecessary scenes that add nothing to the game and could've been cut
Bloodborne has an amazing plot but I wish FromSoft made it more clear to the player. Major plot points of the game should be delivered to the player by progressing through the game, not by watching a video on Youtube. People finish the game and don't even have any idea about the underlying story
