    Title.

Anyone read/is reading books from Western authors?

I’d like to add them to my growing lit list.

Caveat being that the books in question are lesser known.

Bonus points if they are pre-WWII…

  • Turganov - Fathers and Sons, russian so not exactly western (he was a westerner liberal) but i find him underrated and better than Dostoevsky, especially father and son which will help u learn more about Nihilism better than Dostoevsky

Balzac - Pere Goriot, dont really see him discussed much other than Marx and Engels appreciation for him , but a great novel to see the changing times of post revolution france

  • jean rhys - good morning, midnight.

it's difficult to call it obscure but it didn't do well when it released, despite that it was universally lauded for its quality. it had somewhat of an uptick in the 50s and then 70-80s and it's back to being 'semi-obscure' again.

  • joris karl huysmans is also underappreciated, although I refuse to call him or his novels obscure
