Yeah but black people are disproportionately charged harsher in crimes like this. The racial disparity in treatment is obvious in America, not saying there should be lenience but rather it should be equal.

Marshawn Lynch and Paul Pierce are Black men who avoided severe punishment. But they did so because they could afford the best high-powered legal teams who could negotiate plea deals and leverage their client’s public image. This isn’t evidence that race doesn’t matter; it’s evidence that extreme wealth (Class) can sometimes override racial bias in the legal system.

OJ Simpson got away with killing a white woman.

The key distinction is between the “average” Black person and the black elite athlete. Statistical disparities in DUI arrests and convictions are well-documented in studies (like those from the ACLU or Bureau of Justice Statistics), which show Black drivers are stopped, searched, and arrested for DUI at higher rates than white drivers, despite similar rates of actual impairment.
The system treats a famous millionaire differently than it treats a working-class person of the same race.

    -

I live in Seattle, they love this nigga here bro. And his case was him sleep after hitting a stationary object then sleeping on the side of the road.
So, the example is bad because it conflates the experience of the ultra-wealthy 1% with the general population, ignoring the reality that the other 99% of Black drivers don’t have a team of lawyers and a publicist to get their charges reduced to a fine.

lack defendants are over‑represented among people charged with serious homicide offenses, including forms of “imputed liability” murder (felony murder / accomplice liability), relative to their share of the population

A***yses of homicide and death‑eligible cases show two separate racial effects: one tied to the offender’s race and another, more significantly tied to the victim’s race.

    • Killers of white victims face significantly higher odds of the harshest punishments than killers of nonwhite victims.

When a death results from negligence (for example, vehicular manslaughter), prosecutors have substantial discretion in what to charge (negligent homicide vs manslaughter vs higher homicide charge), and prior work on homicide shows that this discretion is where racial bias often enters.

    • Policy documents and reform discussions acknowledge existing racial disparities in serious traffic‑death offenses (manslaughter by vehicle or criminally negligent homicide), even where the statutory penalties themselves are race‑neutral.
In practice, Black defendants in homicide cases can be charged more harshly (e.g., murder instead of manslaughter/negligent homicide) and are more often swept into doctrines that increase punishment exposure.

Sentencing Project (2023) – Shows how racial disparities persist in serious traffic and vehicular cases including DUI and traffic-related deaths, even though the statutes themselves are race-neutral. Also talks about how discretion at charging is where bias enters.

Racial bias and DUI enforcement: Comparing conviction rates with frequency of behavior:

    escholarship.org/uc/item/56z2x2zx#:~:text=This%20suggests%20racial%20bias%20plays,who%20engage%20in%20similar%20behavior.

suggests racial bias plays a role in DUI convictions, with White men experiencing a lower probability of conviction than Latino/Hispanic men who engage in similar behavior.

I’ll both concede and take my L with this

But unfortunately (and before you ask, yeah it’a a moral blind spot, 2 classmates are no longer here because of it so idgaf) I personally view all drunk drivers with homicide charges under the lens of “fuck em” so I’m not really in the mood to look at em in an empathic lens unfortunately.

Like I said I know that’s wrong. But it’s my truth too

Agreed, and people who speed over the limit. We all follow the same rules on the roads, vehicles or pedestrian walking. If you don’t follow the law and someone dies because of it, you had a responsibility by operating that vehicle to put people’s safety first and for example the driver ends up killing someone? Should be murder imo
