I don’t think they would have lived among us very long or we’d have more proof that they were here. I would think it’s more likely that they visit earth frequently and have for thousands of years, but were more willing to communicate and live among us whenever we were less technologically advanced. At some point we’d become more of a threat and they start observing us from a distance instead.
