This store owner never saw a weapon and was never threatened with one. He was never even physically attacked. The kid went for his merchandise, which prompted the store owner to attack him. It was defense of property, clear cut brother. He might still get charged and sued though especially after that reddit thread

It’s self defense after the robbery began, jumping the counter was an obvious act of aggression. He had every right to defend himself. It also doesn’t matter what someone says after you begin fighting back due to the fact that if you stop before the threat is incapacitated there is nothing stopping them from retaliation. It’s kill or be killed after you start defending yourself especially if you are cornered.

Many self defense laws apply to acting in defense of your place of employment. But once again, the guy jumped the counter. At that point most people are going to see red.
