it is never too late to switch never too late. i started off pre-med said f*** this, dropped out for a little bit went back as CS, got into a traumatic car accident that made me miss some time and got back and finished in 6 years from my freshman year. im still young with a good degree and skill set and have a good ass job. none of those faang companies question how many years it took all care about is if i can do the job. you got this and do whatever you feel is right don’t worry about timelines
Im so happy you went back and finished. So many people take breaks and then never go back. I have a passion and a genuine interest for CS, but if I pursue CS at UVA I'll have to become a part time student. I completed all may gen eds at a CC, so there's nothing else to add to my schedule aside from my desired major.
What if I just finished the cog sci major and went for a masters in CS or a second bachelors?
I'm using financial aid and I'm pretty sure if I add extra semesters I risk running out of aid. I'm not sure how much ive used so far but I def can't pay out of pocket.
I hope you figure it out! I wish you the best! Maybe taking the risk of not being accepted into the major is worth it with the switch?
You’re never trapped, you almost always have a choice. It’s going to be tough, but I think you should do what you know is right and something you’d be happier with in the long run
I feel like finishing cognitive science would be the best move since im almost done with the major and then pursue CS somewhere else and aim for a masters.
I feel if I pursue cs now and become a part time student it'll hurt me in the long run. I would have to drive an hour and thirty mins from my house to UVA campus everyday and put tons of miles on my car.
@op if you are that close to being done and don't want to start over just go get your masters in cs
Why is he having u switch to major not even adjacent to the field you want to be in ?
He couldn't switch u to any data science, IT, Electrical and computer engineering or just a straight up computer engineering field
The problem is I transferred in with so many credits and those fields have prerequisites that I don't have completed. I'm considered a senior so now it's about finishing up since im only allowed 5 semesters.
I'm meeting with the transfer dean again this week for clarity because I'm confused. The advising for transfer students is terrible here.

This is a great idea

i wouldn’t get additional degrees tbh but i guess it depends on time/money. can you take summer/winter classes? can you take additional community college classes that will transfer? i was a part time student for a semester which wasn’t ideal academically and for financial aid but maybe you can take the extra time to do extra curriculars and bolster your CS skills idk you’ll never be this young with options again just don’t think you have to do stuff so rigidly you’re in better shape than you think

Ur only allowed 5 semesters?
Ur only allowed 5 semesters?
Only 5 full time semesters. They’ll add two additional semesters if I absolutely need it but that’s all. I wish I had just transferred to JMU in 2021 I would have been done with CS by now. Feel like I messed myself up coming to UVA.

I have the maximum amount of transferable credits from a CC. I would have to go part time at uva and JMU or somehow find easy classes to load my schedule with which would be difficult. I think the root of the situation is avoiding going part time and running out of aid.
There's absolutely NO point in graduating with a major you don't like. If you can't decide which major to do id suggest doing something else for a while. College degrees are only as helpful as your passion and resume are and in a field like CS youll want to be pretty much spotless cus it's competitive as f*** out here
Yea it’s very competitive. I’m meeting with the dean soon and I’m going to ask him how long it would take me to complete CS and how would going part time work. I know that if I take this route it’ll be hell traveling back and forth on the highway everyday. I also have a limited amount of aid so financial aid may not even cover the full duration of CS.
I hate pursing a major I have no passion for but the alternatives are either starting over at a different university and end up going part time or go part time now.

Programming is one of those things where all that matters is your work experience. Degrees are nice but what ppl rly want to see is experience. That's why I ask if u code a lot. U should be coding for fun just learning different languages if u wanna really make sure ur competitive.
These days just coding is not always enough so u might wanna focus on something else like math/stats and use coding to supplement ur work. I am a biology major but I code for a living because i got experience early
