buzzer beater aoty
i love the album so i’m not saying this negatively (and am probably being dramatic) but this album is sad as hell. some of these lyrics sound like a cry for help

If you win the rat race, and you come in 1st place
then you're still a rat.
My twin finna have me listening to the album totally different now. I thought we were having fun.
sunglasses overrated .. (makes for an intriguing beat~intro, falls short as a compelling song outside of that) but listening to the album in full turned me more charitable toward it
too easy easily the most dull track on here (incredibly safe, worst kind of generic, dumpster juice hook, little progression)
only became a genuine fan in 2023, but empty stadium / flashbacks reflect my favorite kind of sound from her (moody, introspective, somber, relatively downtempo). could take an entire album of this, uh huh, red flags, getting no sleep, etc
i'd rather be alone very much has the dna of generic radio pop but the subject matter is poignant~Love a good ballad
crash out is a S-tier bop through n through +the west coast energy is felt. i get the whole "just me" aspect of the project but a remix of this with schoolboy q or az chike..
disagree that pillow fight is bad.. like at all. simple, catchy, cute, soft, intimate, playful. the aphex twin-esque piano makes it feel like a spiritual sister to blame game lol
(s/title track) popstar feels like a cross between imogen heap and perry's last friday night (t.g.i.f); i dig it
brainrot calls to mind that particular ilk of tiktok sounds in the past few years (e.g., aquatic ambience) so i wudnt put it past that being intentional. felt apt
from the heavy percussion to the lo-fi sample, cloud 9 damn near feels like some cities aviv s***. kinda fascinating in that way
always enjoy when an artist makes the last track a drastic detour from everything before. probably a remedial guitar loop to someone more fussy but idc im eating it up. like cole2 said, i'd take a country~dream pop album -- and i dont doubt this clears watever the boogeywoman just put out lol. reminds me of cudi's 'troubled boy'.. maybe it's an aquarius thing.
very ambitious album for her at this point in their career (first solo billboard hot 100 placement, simultaneous resurgence and a bolstered trajectory that could very well take her to unprecedented heights); creative freedom no doubt encouraged by her newly indie~label break status. liked that a lot of this felt somewhat post-apocalyptic vignettes; like .. hedonists, on the dancefloor of a dying amerika~pop culture.
the intuitive sequencing also makes the supposed lack of cohesion forgivable to me. navigates the breadth of its sonic landscape pretty astutely; acc helps melatonin and nobody wanna dance anymore stand out more because of it
Great review

Brainrot
(Brainrot) I'm nothing but numb
(Brainrot) So sick of fake love
(Br-brainrot) Everywhere that I go, it's amazing
Guess money can't save me
I don't wanna die no more, uh
I don't wanna die no more, uh
I just wanna dance all night
I just wanna rage with my friends, I'ma do it for the plot
F*** around, don't even care
Heavyweight
I been, I been holding all this heavy weight
And I don't wanna bend until I break
I can't carry it now
And I been holding on so many days
And I'm not strong enough to ever say
I can't carry it now
It's weighing me down
Think I'll probably always be stuck in this position
Doing s*** you didn't ask of me
What happens if I did it?
I know everyone relies on me to keep it all together
And I'm killing myself tryna make it better
So I just work hardеr
I'm the oldest daughter
And nothing's еver gonna change
Twentyfive Eight
All I want to do is what I was meant to do
Spendin' the days and nights climbin' the ladder to nowhere
Get so emotional thinkin' 'bout who I used to be
If you win the rat race and you come in first place
Then you're still a rat (Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Popstar
All the boys seem so shallow
Everyone wanna be famous
They all move here tryna make it
Growing up here, you get jaded
Social climbers ain't my type
But I do know how to fake it
I can make myself participate to get a seat at the table
Still, I dress it up, but it's all a mirage
Gonna park my 'Rari in my parents' garage
They romanticize it all 'cause the weather's always nice
If you wanna sell your soul, then you gotta pay the price like
all of empty stadium
all of i’d rather be alone
all of crash out
seems like this album has more of those sadder, nihilistic moments wrapped up in glitzy production ala being a popstar

I don’t get that vibe at all lol.
this album reminds me of Hopscotch. like Hopscotch is a bop but it’s always been depressing as f*** to me in the context of the album. very much this

Honestly slept on Too Easy when it dropped as a single. Only played it once. S*** f***in SMACK now that I'm hearing it on the regular.
