Been playing that Nina "OST" album a lot this past week and this drops, nice lil coincidence

their first three records is prime material, not without its flaws but something that felt unearthed from a raw, authentic emotional core

lot of the songs on the twits feels like a really bad strokes cover band. this just kinda confirmed for me the direction they are going in, which is a shame because i imagined them signing to matador would allow them to maintain a sizeable audience while still doing experimental s***

i get that a lot of these art school city ppl don’t want to be hypnagogic artists past their 20s but holy s*** once the facade drops and everything’s exposed there’s not a lot that’s pretty.

i really wanted to like this one but the mv almost confirms for me they’re trying to be more of a subversive but cliche rock band than the new VU.

they said they wanted to be arctic monkeys like a year and a half ago tbf

alex turner also has a unique voice that got better with age. their vocal confidence is improving but im not really connecting with it.

double virgo was a great project for traditional sounding s***, but to apply those sensibilities to a project that melted and deconstructed what indie rock should sound like in 2020’s just feels so inauthentic to me.

i’m not mad about them making traditional sounding rock, i just feel like if u want to do that, then at least give us an interesting riff. their playing and vocals aren’t enough to carry through an albums worth of material like this. i mean this is like ramones level playing. it doesn’t scream attitude or youthful abandon. what’s even more grating is that it felt like their s*** last year with the the TW*TS EP and even the twits singles did this sound better than they do it here.

i mean this riff is just so f***ing bad bro, the music video is so campy i want to convince myself it’s some post ironic middle finger, but double virgo’s releases isn’t giving me confidence

i’m afraid they got the clout from world music and ran with it.

what i will say is their lyrical ability is the one thing that never seems to be compromised. they are f***ing good at writing simple, catchy, hard hitting lines that make immediately make sense to anyone under 35.

they can be pavement level if they want to carry this sound but if they’re going to have these voices they need to at least come thru with interesting guitar work. or maybe the production that made double virgos vegyn produced record so intriguing
