Now that we’re on the subject from the last few pages…the Drake music “quality”/enjoyability discussion is more nuanced than black and white. It’s based on a more anecdotal realization, but there is a separation of music and Drake, and depending on the goals of your tastes in art period, you may fall to the preference of one side more than the other. From this pov I can even empathize with people who place FATD in high esteem even though I personally think it’s rancid - due to my own tastes, not speaking at all to the tens of millions of people worldwide who listen to the project.

It helped me also be able to articulate my own distaste for more recent Drake music: I don’t like the keys/strings and bass sections. Everything that it couldn’t be started to dawn on me; I’m not close-minded to genre bending so it can’t be that, I like Drake’s voice so it can’t be that, I fw Nokia and What Did I Miss so it can’t be bias to anything new. And while I think his flows and rapping performances as of late leave something significant to be desired in comparison to previous years, there isn’t nearly the disparity his most vocal detractors suggests there is, definitely not to the point where his current voice and flows outright ruin the enjoyability of his songs

I think for me and probably many like me, including some who were looking to be able to properly articulate some sort of distaste with mainly the music itself, albeit constructively in the most earnest and not ironic or underhanded sense, this is the case. The keys/strings and bass sections are just not eliciting the same rousing and engaging takes on universal moods through notation and rhythm that his older music did, it’s kind of lifeless in that department rn. His toplines are suffering as a result, his flows and required - in his opinion while recording - vocal performances are suffering as a result
