Breaking news: whites are passionate and easily fascinated about non white things
Like are we going to conveniently ignore that black hiphop heads exist or that most white people who listen to hiphop don’t care about the genre’s history?
Bro is acting like the only black hiphop fans that exist are hood rap fans and romanticizing all white hiphop fans like they all care about the history. I don’t like that s***
Exactly this. What he's saying about knowing older generations is super valid imo. But this whole "white" thing is giving me the ick. Bro could've easily made his point without race. And you know why he did it. Its the same reason artists suck up to Eminem...
I’m ngl fam I totally get why most people don’t research old hip hop listen to what’s popular now and how different it sounds to older music a lot of differences
Why do people expect younger people bumping whim whammie to listen to illmatic or some s***
goes hard if youre 12

this entirely ignores what streaming and algorithms have done to music discovery tbh
10/15 years ago if you were online posting about music then you would have to try pretty hard to not hear about dilla/madlib etc. it’s way more difficult now to exhume classics when you have algorithms feeding you flavor of the month jams and personalized curation on such a steady basis. most of the younger gen is not seeking it out unless it becomes a trending audio

crine at using adam friedland for this
Inspiring to know a gay bug can pull 6 page threads on ktt2
Love him or hate him, Adam Friedland is the bug everybody is talking about – from political discourse to cultural conversations, Adam sparks discussion like no other sub-human could
Welcome back man
this would make sense if black people cared about aristotle or plato more than white ppl
I meant moreso a stagnant fetishization for the classics and this arbitrary requirement to be well versed in them to participate in culture, when in reality you can just keep being informed by their progeny and building from there

Oh hey
Oh hey
oh u didn’t know sherm back??

Cooked these dumbasses
This same observation/argument can be made regarding every genre of music, movies, pro sports, etc. it’s definitely not even a black or white thing
‘People become fans of things to varying degrees’ is almost too obvious. Most just enjoy the current product and don’t want to spend time on the internet discovering the rest.
Millions listen to Taylor Swift but don’t know all her boyfriends or eras and can’t name country or pop artists from 20+ years ago. Millions watch marvel movies but will never read a comic book. Millions watch the NBA/MLB/PGA/etc. but couldn’t pick prominent former players out of a line-up
And it’s all fine. We’re on a hip hop forum that’s been around forever so it seems ridiculous to not know Madlib’s music, but it’s fine, and anyways people usually delve deeper into stuff when they’re older and more curious
This is just trash discourse to help peddle engagement and anger. White people and black people are not monoliths first off. Second off, respectfully, a white person could never connect with the roots of hip hop comparative to a black person so this whole knowledge s*** is just coming from second hand accounting told to them by a black person directly or indirectly. Dumb tweet dumb thread
Exactly.
For every hood nigga who only listens to radio/club s*** they can vibe too, there's a suburban White guy who also listens to mainstream s***.
And there's plenty of Black hip hop heads from the hood. They're just less attention seeking than their White counterparts or don't have the money/tools to have a platform.
Hell, I went to one of the grimiest high schools in America that's the same as one in an old movie starring Morgan Freeman. And I still met plenty of niggas who f***ed with 90's hip hop and some underground s***.
People discount how much mixtapes play a role in hip hop knowledge too. Mixtapes where rappers would often showcase their best displays of rapping were very popular in the hood. I remember niggas reciting songs off of the mixtapes of Wayne, G Unit, Dipset, Jada, Gucci, Jeezy, ASAP, Cole, etc. like they were hit singles.
I noticed many White hip hop heads tend to downplay the importance of mixtapes way more than Black hip hop heads. Many view them as "throwaways" and only focus on regular albums.
this goes to show that just because you make music doesn't mean you have to know any critically acclaimed artist within the same genre
Did you see what they did to my boi sanji in the latest kizaru fight
