I personally like the āglossā sound that you mentioned lol, whatās your issue with it?
Where do I start?
The squashed dynamics brought upon by the loudness war that is all being pushed further with the glossy compressor settings that are used to pump the music more. I just heard it in some Rene Rapp song my girl played me the other week, the drums came in and they were quiet and lacking power, everything else had more power behind it.
The compressor and limiter has become a āsaviorā that if anything is ruining the sound of music. Nothing sounds truly organic, plus everyone wanting to use emulators and plugins of outboard gear instead of going to the actual studios and learning to use said gear will give you said āplasticā gloss and sound.
Music production being placed into a computer really ruined this and the overuse of compressors and saturations, under the guise of āit needs to hit harderā (find a new sample and work with levels and EQ instead).
Everything sounds coated in plastic and fake, Dawn doesnāt have that all too much (lack of plugins helps) AH has it a bit but it can only be heard in the delays and such on Abelās voice and synths (Crystallizer from SoundToys specifically can be heard on Alone Again to cause this). Notice how this gloss and sound isnāt found on RAM (no plugins or emulators), thereās a theme hereā¦
Iād much rather hear an organically leveled album thatās a bit quieter that used less compressors, limiters and saturates and focused on minding their levels and getting the right EQ. Except thatās not what music is about anymore, itās about the product itself, not the music or the passion put into it. Which is why Iām excited for this chapter to close, they seem to be putting the passion and dedication in that is necessary.
LEAVE THE DAWs BEHIND AND LEARN INSTRUMENTS AGAIN (end rant)

Yeah I definitely agree with a lot of the points you made, when I hear āglossā I just think of a clean almost āshinyāsounding track, I didnāt know you were talking about multiple aspects of complexity

I think this album might be a bit more dynamic than previous ones... Change of microphones and recording to tape.
Using MPE controllers and not only using modern synths which are all stereo (Prophet 5/10 were mono outputs and you would often use them as layers and pan them)
But you never know, it might all be squeezed to death in the mixing & mastering process

This album seems to be the least ācompromisedā by the more modern production sound and style, more hardware, less software (which is why illangelo hasnāt been seen around too much, heās just NOW getting into hardware more recently, heās an in the box guy).
I truly look forward to this album from a production standpoint, I know itās going to be great, I just hope vocally he has rested and isnāt using autotune (even though itās industry standard) as much, it might have been an artistic choice for 4:23 songs but it is disappointing that it is more obvious on them.
The change in microphones, the use of the Studer, Iām excited I have hopes sonically for this album that induction be met, or will be let down.

Oh yeah, Iām a producer so Iām talking about actual issues that I personally find that are diluting the quality of music and the creative output in all honesty. But this is just subjective and opinion, but I also have an acquired taste from listening to and favoring music from the late 60s through the early 90s. Taking note of Bruce Swedien and his methods and others and trying to keep that in mind with todayās musical landscape. Interesting times indeed.

You should check out my good friend Dexter Simmons, he is one of the few ones left that still carries that golden information from the past.

Rad! What would you say are Abel's 7 best sounding songs?

All around production wise?
Too Late - the production is clean, not too much āglossā on it, the low end at the back end of the track paired with the drums and how it plays together is superb.
After Hours - a beautiful soundscape, then the beat evolves too, itās a lot and much at once without being too overpowering, it plays well with his vocals and vice versa.
Every Angel is Terrifying - a wonderful mesh of OPN and Abel coming together to create a beautiful world. Yes half of it is an āinfomercialā but it is some of the best production of Dawn FM. It goes from very spectrum filling and euphoric sounding that makes your speakers feel like they could float away, then puts you in front of the TV as a kid in the night. The glow of the ad blasting off the walls and the lights surround you, thatās exactly what this song sounds like. The layers to this song though, the little hospital track, the choir, the synths, everythingā¦
Faith - a literal movie, the transitions, how the whole song flows and the speakers stay warm and full without the spectrum being overbearing. The lyrics tell a story and serve a great purpose, great song.
Professional - beautiful full production, cinematic, what a way to start a debut, just needs a mixing update.
Privilege - while more of a softer song of Abelās it manages imo to encapsulate what he does best: somber, sorrowful heartbroken, lonely playboy. Yes we all know itās a character, itās so genuine and so Abel and also so āThe Weekndā here and I love it. The vinyl crackling, the weariness it provides in context to the song and the lyrics. The production on it isnāt overstated, it doesnāt overstay its welcome and is perfectly pairing with Abel.
Belong to The World - Sounds like it came straight out of a movie, although it could use a mixing update, it lacks a bit of depth and low end. Besides that, the drums fit perfectly and sit and make you feel like youāre in a city not far different from Los Angeles 2019 in the Blade Runner universe. What a song, what an album, all hail Kiss Land.
funny bc it was so hard to get normans to like his old stuff back in the day
i think those "i like his old stuff better" mentioned just mean bbtm and starboy lol
