I think the concept is that the universe he’s creating’s purgatory is an empty void where all there is to do is listen to a supernatural radio station.
After Hours was normal because it was a series of snapshots from his/the character’s troubled life, and since they died at the end, Dawn is in the afterlife; where you can get much more weird and freaky with the concepts without it being too much of a sudden shift.
Just my opinion though
