alright so first, i'm gonna start off by saying this is difficult now bc pretty much every current way i have / can find online uses good quality encoders at this point, so i'll show what i can

so first, i'll start with Nothing But Net by Travis Scott, Young Thug & PND

the 320kbps rip is the MP3 that was directly bounced out of the session, i think from ProTools. i don't personally have it, but i've been told and shown by various people who do have it that the default encoder will convert audio files to 320kpbs MP3s with shelves at 16kHz, but when compared to lossless exports, there's nearly no loss below that frequency

here's proof that shelves aren't always a good indicator of bitrate:

shelf: 16kHz, but also 20kHz when the drums come in
i'm pretty sure that's the default iTunes MP3 encoder's work

compared to Club Paradise:

bitrate: 192kbps
shelf: 16kHz

and none of these (except the soundcloud rip of NBN above) are files that were converted to lossy multiple times, that's literally how they were exported. that alone is proof enough that bitrate and frequency shelves aren't guaranteed 1:1 indicators, but i'm gonna provide some more screenshots that i took bc i already put in the effort & don't want it to go to waste

literally the only difference between v1, v2, and v3 is the shelf height, and those are just different settings from the same encoder

so yea, while there's definitely a correlation between shelf height and bitrate, it's not a 1:1 relationship and strongly depends on the settings used & the encoder to convert the file. plus, the data underneath the shelf is very important to note, as a 320kbps file that shelves at 16kHz will have a much more full look to the frequencies below that shelf than a 128kbps file will have.

Thursday was probably just exported using the s***ty ProTools default encoder

@bigcaddy i also have hundreds of Young Thug MP3s bounced directly from the session in 320kbps MP3 that shelf at 16kHz, which is a pretty clear indicator that the whole 320->20kHz, 192->18kHz, 128->16kHz thing (or whatever numbers you'd mentioned) aren't always accurate
