besides general weeknd saturation, I feel like the first reactions on social media were mixed because even though after hours wasn’t a full 80s album, it helped usher in an 80s revival in modern pop. since Dawn only doubled down on that after almost 2 years of this 80s revival, people felt exhausted and figured he wasn’t doing anything special even though Dawn is a special album

speaking of the 80s revival, I think that the reason that he wasn’t nominated for the Grammys was because he helped usher in the 80s revival along with dua lipa. Imo the Grammys care about mainting the white status quo which is why even from the start, they neglected rock because it was “different” (black) until it wasn’t “different” anymore. even though the revival was partially the result of a black man, they had to recognize the revival somehow so they picked the status quo satisfying white person over the black person

Yeah, the real problem is that they only like certain genres when it becomes safe and, tbh, dusty. Hip Hop is fresh, "dangerous", and hasn't been taken over by white people, which is why so many hip hop artists don't get the accolades they deserve.
