Why is the theming around both old abel and the radio stuff? Like, one or the other I totally see it. Both are cool, but I don't get why he did it or what it means.

He’s stuck in purgatory because of a life of regrets.

Up to interpretation but my personal view is that since this album is supposed to be an endless loop of being stuck in purgatory after you die; to me, old Abel signifies how long he’s actually been waiting to transition to the After Life (next album).

The radio station Abel explains here

“Picture the album being like the listener is dead,” The Weeknd said. “And they’re stuck in this purgatory state, which I always imagined would be like being stuck in traffic waiting to reach the light at the end of the tunnel.” He continued, “And while you’re stuck in traffic, they got a radio station playing in the car, with a radio host guiding you to the light and helping you transition to the other side. So it could feel celebratory, could feel bleak, however, you want to make it feel, but that’s what The Dawn is for me.”

The Mallory Bros do a crazy deep dive on this entire concept which made me rethink how I viewed the album because it makes total sense. They basically say the entire album is sort of a confession to God about how he’s trying to overcome the burdens he’s held throughout his life, and that he’s ready to transition. Then God (Jim Carrey) is sort of like “Yeah that’s bullshit you’re stuck here” on Phantom Regret, just much more beautifully lol

Seems like now or in the coming weeks would be a good time for a deluxe, and this is just enough tracks to make for a nice little deluxe EP. Those songs + those artists would also be a good push for it to go #1.
