Totally agree. Don’t think The Weeknd’s writing has been “good” since 2013. But then again, that’s never really hindered him + his teams ability to write a killer song, which is evident through this record. Do you have a definite favorite song off of the album right now?

Yeah Kiss Land was his songwriting peak. Can't blame him though the direction he took doesn't really enable you to focus more on the writing, since 2015 it's been pretty much 3 line verses and a chorus. I think adding the concept idea to this album was a smart move man it just adds a little more to the same old subject matter. But he definitely improved his writing quite a bit on this album I think.

But I’d say, for a pop album in 2022, the lyricism has some shining moments - especially songs like Less Than Zero, Phantom Regret etc.

Kiss Land has been referenced above and I wholeheartedly agree that’s as close to pop/R&B lyricism peak as The Weeknd has ever got, but his headspace is light years away from that right now.

For where he is right now and the type of music he’s making, I think the lyricism is pretty good.

Which brings up a good question, last year he said the blm movement and what was going on in the world inspired to write. Do you think he has it in him to add some political/current affairs subject matters to his work or will he keep doing what's doing now?

I had a feeling that would be your favorite lol. It is is unfortunate as you said, because like I said the ability to craft a great song is there, but like you said it’s really over the same kind of lyrics and song structure which does get tiring. It’s frustrating because you can hear that if him and his team just step out of their comfort zone structurally they can easily make some really special music. Not to say this isn’t special, but there’s definitely room to branch out.

I like what @bluemagic said about the concept of the album adding a little bit to the songs themselves which I kind of agree with. The fact it’s such an “album” in the front to back sense and how intense the production can be sort of masks the fact it’s pretty similar to previous works. I was thinking about that last night.

Somehow knowing that Jim Carrey narrates at the end makes the ending much doper

I like the simplicity of the lyrics honestly, I normally am super a*** about song writing but I don’t have any problems with this album apart from best friends. I actually think the lyrics on this album do exactly what they’re supposed to do on every track.

when you’re talking about heartbreak you don’t really care to sound poetic. someone’s who’s heartbroken is going to just plead, not write a fancy sonnet
