I thought Best Friends was filler on my first listen too but trust me it’s not
Best Friends -> Is There Someone Else? -> Starry Eyes is its own mini narrative by itself within the larger context of the album
would you make any cuts or you think it's all hitters?
I personally wouldn’t I think. Maybe I’d move Every Angel is Terrifying somewhere else I feel like it’s placed a lil weird. I like how it’s structured and flows though, like Best Friends into Is There Someone Else is probably my favorite moment on the whole project
some artists i just gotta accept that their material won't really stretch past what they normally talk about
we like 10 projects in now i don't really see the weeknd getting into too much besides sex/love/heartbreak/drugs and maybe religion. which of course there's plenty there within those topics themselves. but yeah
on dawn there's traces of him expanding beyond his typical theme of heartbreak/drugs. there's also nothing inherently wrong with recycling these topics, so long as you make it interesting and not super shallow
compare the songwriting and lyricism on How Do I Make You Love Me VS Best Friends, its a night and day difference. both have common themes but one is detailed, the other is shallow and vapid, its insane to me that both of these songs belong to the same album
or take Gasoline, which I thought would set the tone for the rest of the album with lyrics like
I've fallen into emptiness - I'm staring into the abyss, I'm lookin' at myself again
It's 5 AM, I'm nihilist I know there's nothing after this - Obsessing over aftermaths, apocalypse and hopelessness - The only thing I understand is zero sum of tenderness
Around, around, around, around we go
In this game called life, we are not free
the lyrics + delivery makes it unlike anything he's ever done before and a completely different vibe. he's fully capable of pushing his sound forward, but how much does he really want to?

I love Dawn. I think I see him playing with psych for After Life too. I’d be really interested to hear his take on it especially when he’s played with those sounds since the beginning, especially sound & structure wise

absolutely Gasoline is an immediate standout in all ways
it seems like he's really guarded with his writing. it's really just been him and Belly for the most part if i'm not mistaken as far as the words go? I think Max Martin is even more on the melody and production/arranging side of things. but i wonder what he'd think about bringing some writers in, freshen things up a bit.
it has to be done for the sake of the album
if those tracks it would've been teflon
is there someone else is top 5 abel
Am I the only one that feels like this a more fully developed kids land as far as the subject matter in this album
Agreed
is there someone else is top 5 abel
WOW
i guess i'm just too in love with the energy in those first 5 tracks man i can't connect with that one yet
nah nigga come up with a better name than After Life
that’s not gonna be the album title lol
nah nigga come up with a better name than After Life
Most likely. Reminds me of when we were all saying The Dawn
