Atleast in my research, its hard to say. Most people wanted him to go back damn near every album prior to the one he released since he literally switched it up so much.

For instance, niggas were like when he dropped low. they wanted him to do more of station to station, same thing when he was done with his ziggy stardust character and went soul with diamond dogs.

But it was during the 80s when most people kinda checked out. Lets dance era. But nothing really changed about the way he made music. Those albums stilll underrated. it was only in retrospect when ppl were like damn. We were trippin. All his albums were f***in great.

He switched it up so much, his core fanbase was a lil smaller than other megastars in the 70s.

At this point I think he’s reached the point where his voice can make almost any sound a hit, I don’t think he has to do the accessible sound to have hits any more. I actually think as far as being hits Sacrifice and Take My Breath play it a little too safe to the point where they’re not exciting enough to be as big as his previous hits. Sacrifice in particular there’s something very bland about the song and it doesn’t feel natural to me, the way Weeknd keeps saying “I don’t wanna sack” is funny
