I knew a football player who was a mega dork who was half-way bullied only by other bigger kids because he could kill you with his size.

Yeah some of them are lying in this thread . 90s kids know some anime were socially acceptable some were viewed as weird . Some still are view as weird by uppity adults . Did some anime fans make the rep worse ? Yes but lifetime it depended on area.

While I partially agree some did get made fun of being passionate about things others didn’t consume . Which applies to all eras .
