not to sound like a dusthead, but what's up with the best new school rappers (smino, saba, jid, etc.) taking so long to drop albums? it really feels like they're killing their momentum to get to the next level. cole and kendrick are where they are in part to how active they were early in their careers, and they only slowed down once they were fully on. i'm not complaining, i just want these guys to succeed

well he really gave us 3 projects in 4 years (blkswn, NOIR, SAD) it's just that the period between albums seems pretty long, especially since we've known about it for so long.

JID the same situation technically (never story, dicap 2, spilligion) and Saba probably takes more time due to being independent. but i feel you

Yea kinda what @provider said but also Smino was in the middle of switching labels from Interscope to Motown, JID and Saba were going through a lot of personal stuff so I don’t blame them for taking long.

yeah i get it, they don't owe us anything and i appreciate their art very much. i just feel like maybe they didn't capitalize on their momentum, but i'm glad that they prioritized their mental health. who knows, they could always drop a hit song out of the sky and gain more momentum than they ever had before

I feel like there are many reasons to this.

I do feel like the ppl you named are dropping on regular course as kendrick and cole when they were at the same point in their careers esp when you account features. Smino, saba, and JID are already very prolific and respected.

I feel like your statement has some recency bias included, but i definitely feel you would love to jus have access to the hard drives. 😂

i disagree, but in fairness, kendrick and cole found success earlier than the people i mentioned. cole's early major releases were 2011, 2013, and he was cemented in 2014. kendrick's early major releases were 2010, 2011, and he was cemented in 2012.
jid had 2017, 2018, but now it's been 4 years and he's not cemented. smino had 2017, 2018, but now it's been 4 years and he's not cemented. saba had 2016, 2018, and a 4 year period before 2022, and the numbers suggest his hype notably shrunk. did it shrink because he took so long, or was the quality just not there? that's a bit subjective, but i certainly don't think it helped. also, when i say cemented, i mean as mainstream figures, not quality wise - the quality is there, in my personal opinion.

they've been decently active with features - that imagine dragons song with jid was particularly huge and could help his next album out - but i don't think features are nearly as important as solo material. i agree that they're very well respected within the hip hop community, but if we're being honest, most casual music fans don't know who they are compared to somebody like kendrick and cole, even earlier in their careers.

once again, i'm glad that these guys are taking the time if that's what they want to do - especially if it's for mental health reasons - but i think it might be hurting their growth. i hope i'm wrong because i want them to be superstars.

(sorry for the length btw, i just think it's a really fascinating conversation, all love)

ironically those three rappers were influenced (maybe smino's just a fan?) by kendrick

a better question for you : why did he complain about the wait and then say i’m not waiting next time & thennnnn ?

If he has all this music take a page from Lil B, Gucci, Bone Thugs z-ro etc

drop the music and if people check one project and people don’t check the other one - join the club of a lot of great artists 😒

Saba's wait made a lot of sense anyway Care for Me is a classic imo and he had to take time to craft something that could stand on its own and not sit in that shadow

haha i bet it's because when the wait is outside of your control you're like omggg f*** this I need to drop NOW f*** this label bullshit, but then once it's actually settled and dropping becomes a real option, you start to think about all the things you need to actually do to make your project successful

I’m not sure but JID said he delayed his album due to personal reasons, also quarantine was definitely a huge factor for Saba cuz it looked like he was ready to drop in 2020. Smino was going to drop too but gave us She Already Decided for free
