i think part of it is cuz rock music was still popular but a big chunk of the population wasnt feeling the mainstream stuff (nu-metal, pop punk or whatever else) so there was also a demand for weirder, alternative DIY stuff, i remember even Jay Z talked about grizzly bear
rock isnt really popular these days compared to other genres so it just doesnt need an alternative, instead rock itself has become an alternative (which is why a lot of the more "popular" rock acts suck big time)
back in the day you would actually see indie acts on the charts, i mentioned it before but Iron and Wine has a #2 album
obviously theres still good music being made its just super niche
I think the indie rock scene is great now but yea it's not really mainstream sounding anymore either. the bands of the peak era knew how to make crossover pop hits tbh.
all that s*** sucked ass and is largely responsible for rock music as a whole going to complete dog s***
Thank god that stuff is dead. And embarrassment to music.

yeah and even then bands like The National had 0 hits and still managed to do well, it was a special era
i just started listening to tokyo police club i missed out on that era
TPC was good but they also marked the beginning of the end for Saddle Creek Records as it represented a shift away from finding local talent, which is what they thrived on for so long. The label got completely out of touch with the scene and missed a ton of opportunities to put on some incredible local talent, which in turn led to the music scene in Omaha as a whole stagnating.
The label has never bounced back and the only decent things they do anymore are anniversary re releases

ass is a stretch but some of it hasn't aged well.
Easily one of my favorite albums ever.
Kevin is still making good s*** though, he just isn’t making indie rock anymore
