Big fan of solo Thom. Didn't think this was as bad as some have made out but did certainly drag and lack some magic.

That said, really like Ice Shelf, The Spirit, and Tall Tales.

People are gonna rip him apart because he criticized Hamas and compared them to Israel here, but I genuinely feel like people would be mad at anything he said either way at this point.

I think this is a stronger statement than a lot of musicians make (see Jonny's idiotic posts) and people are gonna get mad that he criticized the social media "witch-hunt" so much, but what he says here about all that isn't far from the truth.

His son and wife are both openly pro-Palestine. His son's band had multiple gigs canceled because their touring partners always shows a Palestine flag. I've been saying it was foolish that assuming his silence meant he was some fervent Zionist just because his band performed in Israel.

It’s not the best response, I don’t think the bitterness in tone is gonna do him any good either.

I also don’t buy into his excuse of not wanting to “trivialize” an important issue. He’s always been pretty outspoken about politics and humanitarian crises.

i think this is a good statement for the most part, couldn't care less about hostages in the face of genocide but its clear his heart is sort of in the right place

He hasn't done a proper interview in like 5 years and hasn't talked extensively about political matters since....idk.... before that time? He'd tweet political zingers about climate change or Trump or Putin or something, but since social media blew up, he really hasn't been as active or outright with a lot of stuff as people think.

He has a history of doing so in the 2000s for sure, but it was a different time and his statements weren't going to be taken out of context by some rando TikToker.

People are saying he's making the statement "about him" for criticizing the assumptions and hounding people have been doing to him online, but like.....he's spot on.

I've seen in real time over the past few years people hound/bully artists that are thought to believe one thing only to have it blatantly not be the case.

Remember when people bullied Billie Eilish on socials for "queer-baiting" only for her to feel pressured to come out later? This stuff's crazy and happens all the time

Phil just posted this as well after Thom's statement

That’s fair. But despite the current climate of discourse, I’d say it was a mistake in thinking silence was the right choice. The band has a history of controversy with Israel, Jonny has personal ties to the place, and the group generally has a reputation of being progressive and outspoken about issues. It’s understandable why people came down especially hard on them.

i agree that thom is allowed the right to defend himself but i also agree there's a time and place

rough situation, he's stuck between a rock and a hard place and anything he says will give him vitriol, might as well just rip off the band aid

I mean he's not running his accounts or doing anything directly like that anymore - and he's explaining why in this post. Ripping the band-aid off is kinda exactly what this is.

I agree with this mostly, but a celebrity/artist should have the right to disappear and not post about everything random people demand them to. If he had said problematic things recently or done half the s*** Jonny has in the last year, he'd absolutely deserve every ounce of criticism thrown at him. But he had a protestor interrupt a show in Australia simply because he hasn't said anything.

There are people that NEED to be protested and heckled that will never be - both politicians and artists. Sharon Osborne is out here begging governments to revoke Kneecap's visas. Amy Schumer is basically evil lol. But the energy from people who claim to care about Gaza a lot of the time is being spent hounding celebrities that haven't spoken out the way they want them to and making the worst assumptions about them possible just because they're not active on social media.

Someone on Twitter is calling Thom a "fucking monster" over this statement and it's braindead and exactly the s*** he's referring to.
