I've done a combination of both up until now. Had lessons for a year and been self teaching since but thinking of going back to the academy next semester. If you're thinking about self teaching, there's some good Youtube channels out there that walk you through the basics. Definitely would recommend those as to not learn any bad habits because you wouldn't have a teacher to correct you.

Yeah definitely. When I started I just tried some basic chords (C,A,Em,E,Am,D) at the start and some easy riffs (Smoke on the water) to get a feeling of it.
