I dont agree they should have spent an entire episode on the university. All the dialogue they got down in that bonding montage. They got the monkeys. ETC. However the combat sequence could have been extended. Legit only like 2 more minutes and i would be happy. No need to waste an entire episode on the university
Also that university they shot at was actively still in session so they couldn't go into any dorms or anything or film that much. That's probably the reason it was so short
I certainly felt like after such a massive emotional blowout there was more room for them to bond before what happens to Joel and the desperate lengths Ellie's about to go to keep him alive. That love isn't quite feeling established to me.
Would have been a nice opportunity to actually have them deal with infected hands-on (considering those scenes have been so sparse). And then it would have actually allowed them to establish raiders as something to be feared. As opposed to what we got, which was just a few uncoordinated guys with pipes. Plus in those scenes they could have had Ellie actually getting somewhat involved in the combat, which is important for her character development, especially by this point.
Plus, in the game I recall Joel feeling a lot more frustration and worry about whether they were actually ever going to find Fireflies. They were trawling through building after building for any clue. Here it was near instant and then just immediate acceptance of 'oh they've moved on, that's okay, no worries'. No acknowledgment of the massive toll this journey is taking. in the game there's so much relief and catharsis when we do actually catch up with the Fireflies. There's so much mystique built up around them. I don't see that feeling at all the same in the show.
Well explained
"Oh fireflies aren't here. Oh s*** look, a map showing exactly where they went nice."
Wasted that entire part of the game just to show us cgi monkeys lol.
Also I get that they can't have them fighting every few moments like in the game, but seriously, an entire episode with no infected? They are making the world seem much more peaceful that it is in the game.

Yeah this is basically what a few of us have been saying in the pages prior. They've just not effectively established the dangers in this world and that's why there is no real tension in any of the 'action' scenes.

Just for curiosity, besides the final fight at the university, what do you think was lacking with what they showed? Just refreshed myself on a play through of this part, they go to university, Joel talks about football and singing (in show), they see monkeys (in show), Joel separates from Ellie many times to go fight infected in some old university buildings (not the lab) and finds a flamethrower. They find the science building, and they search an empty building (you scavenge for supplies), some tape recorders in there saying they remainder still looking for a cure moved to Salt Lake City (in the show they just find a map that says it and they don’t really search the building except for seeing the monkey inside), they see raiders coming in the building, kill a few then what happens in the game is Joel falls from the second floor onto some rebar
All I’m really seeing missing here is the extended fight at the end for my own tastes. The other stuff (for example maybe a tape recorder?) I don’t think is missed all that much?
Not arguing with how you feel just wanna know what you feel is missing from that scene in the university

End of ep5 and the big horde storming Tess wasn’t enough to show the dangers for you?? Wild. What else do they gotta do?

Show the dangers of gay s***by actually showing it
I think show will be better received when it’s able to be binged tbh. The slower episodes/moments will be more appreciated imo

The swarm in episode 5 and 2 feels like a waste . Not as much tension as clicker or car scene in 5. Big action isn’t their thing and feels walking dead .
Your best take

I've articulated this many times now over the past few pages, and likely far better than I'm about to.
The main character literally just got stabbed, fatally for all we know, and there was absolutely zero real tension there for us as the viewer. Some bozos with pipes turned up and that was it. They got dealt with in 2 seconds and somehow Joel had been stabbed. There was no actual fear factor whatsoever. I implore you to go back to the game, play through that scene, or just watch it, and don't tell me your heart isn't pounding out your chest in the game version Vs the show. That is such a f***ing massive moment/encounter and it's beyond watered down and rushed through in the show.
There is a vast difference between showing us a horde and our protagonists actually taking on dangers themselves. I'm not calling for them to take on that horde, or armies of infected, or raiders every episode. But they are not doing a good job at conveying that joel at least is capable and hardened, and willing to commit the necessary violence to keep Ellie safe in this world. And vice-versa, that Ellie is understanding exactly what the stakes are like in the world outside QZ's, and adapting accordingly. That is not being portrayed effectively.
It's not enough to show that the world is 6/10 dangerous or even 8/10. The world should be absolutely terrifying. Every step they take. Not this sauntering about without a care in the world, fighting f*** all enemies - and then when they do run into some, a single bozo with a pipe somehow gets the jump on Joel and manages to magically f***ing stab him.

Exactly. Thinking one big action scene in one episode is supposed to make up for the rest of the show looking like a vlogger series

Bottom scene belongs in a dr. hunty thread if you know what I mean.
forehead looked crazyyy in that closeup shot but they nailed that powerful interaction

I loved it in the show. Especially the close up of Ellie at the end saying wake up Joel. It felt more realistic too instead of Joel falling a story up.
And they literally describe it multiple times them killing innocent people and Joel said “I’m old and weak.” No s*** he’s not mowing through hordes of people in this. He’s like 56. The f***? He’s been doing fine enough so far. It’s not supposed to be Joel looking invincible like the game. Ellie shot someone. What do you want her to adapt and do? Did you not watch her at the end of episode 5 in the horde scene?
It’s not a fighting show. It’s about Joel and Ellie and what you’d do out of love for someone. I think you went into this show with the wrong idea. This is a fantastic adaption. There’s a reason your opinion like this is in the minority. The games still there for you to superhero your way through hundreds of enemies.
