In a game especially before covid game when they say vaccine my brain kind of just thought cure poof everyone turns back to human or something silly like you give them whatever logic. I did like her trying to give her blood to test it the same way we saw her play around with the infected with the knife to discover. To sell the lie of Joel, Fireflies, Marlene plan being worth while and not just killing another kid for the .001 percent chance of success to get a vaccine that they would in no way team up with Fedra or properly be able to spread to humanity. Got to find a way to land it where Ellie believes in a cure. I mean I know many gamers were like "Ellie didn't consent to die for the cure or vaccine" but like she nearly dies all game and show and no part of her is like "nah lets stop going to the hospital I just want to live". Like getting put under Anesthia in an apocalypse lol. They kind of need that connection with Joel and that feeling of she is willing to die but she doesn't necessarily want to die for nothing . Because her whole life has kind of been horror until she met Joel. Sell us partially on the idea that she accepted death in Left Behind was a possibility but she simply wants to die with someone she loves or for those she loves.
