I guess I don’t really understand this kind of thing as a criticism (if you’re intending it as such)

Like let’s be real, the world still has a long ways to go in queer love being (largely) universally accepted in film and TV. The fact that a mainstream, big budget show, with a massive audience, can produce a love story like this does speak to success of moving into the right direction. And of course the fact that it’s being done through the lens of queer love changes how it’s being received. I don’t see that as a bad thing. Frankly (no pun intended lol), I see it as a huge positive

If this were just your run of the mill het love story, yes you’re right, it wouldn’t be as special. Perhaps that’s part of the point?

another thing is like... i wont spoil things but if you're unfamiliar with details of this story and are going to be bothered with queer representation getting shine and praise. just walk away and stop watching this show now.

Would have been a beautiful love story regardless if they were a gay or straight couple. I think part of the reception is that the story transcended their sexuality. Them being gay was almost an aside, not the main focus of their story.
