The plot for the 1st game is not special on the surface. You are just a middle aged man transporting a girl across the country to try and save humanity.
Without any other context that plot seems uninteresting and has probably been done before in a film.
But the real greatness comes from the journey, the voice acting, the soundtrack, etc
