I am mixed on it . Lol I get it . To me he is still just a guy . He is a father like figure but more via living out his dreams of that. She struggles between her goal of wanting her life to mean something (cure) and wanting the love or acceptance of Joel and eventually Dina . I got a different view of Joel but I respect all interpretations. He was playing games in the sense of he could openly tell her truth about fireflies knocking them out much earlier . But again it’s like a parent wanting to protect people from the truth

That is just my take not trying to be argumentative on this one. Definitely see the multiple layers. The 8 year gap, Guitar scene, standing up for her at the dance definitely give Joel a redemption arc rather than address the elephant in the room. Me personally when a character reaches a certain level I don't like them being given a redemption arc that kind of absolves them to many of horrendous acts. I was same way with Breaking Bad. But I get it.
