for years, especially from 2016-2019, joe had the best and most interesting takes on what was happening in hip hop music.

him not being a big star actually helped his perspective greatly. he could tell you what the def jam execs wanted from him at the time and what was proven to be right/wrong, as well as what he saw the label do for the inside for kanye, jeezy, etc all those 02-06 def jam acts.

as well as the psyche for an artist that is tryna get hot, is hot or is now cold.

“what can a failure tell me to help me?” he can tell you how he failed. a smart man earns from his own mistakes, a wise man learns from the mistakes of others 🤷🏾‍♂️

The pod was also in a different state too, there was less eyes and ears in tune and money involved so they didn’t have much to lose. It’s like the difference between an artist when they are hungry and tryna get on.. compared to when they made it and they on autopilot

it’s crazy to me cause i used to listen to every minute of every episode, perfect for a laugh while working/at the gym/commutes

but i can’t do “im rich? no YOU’RE rich!” “this’ll get a few dollars out of me at the club” “how is mel s***life” and half baked takes/no attempt at research or fact checking to go beyond the surface on most topics

feels like they’re phoning it in, or joe is just less inspired. he was cooking the whole drake kendrick beef though, especially the episode after the last few tracks came out that weekend
