They recently changed the spelling to the correct way. L for Bare & Minimum

But they gotta cut this out. Both sides gotta either settle for whatever is owed or move on.

I feel like after their deal is done Rory is gonna go back to Joe. No way I can see R&M have a long-standing impactful podcast with their current formula.

Agree they dragged the subject on too long, and the fear mongering was heavy

Still I think it was important they dug into that topic

It was refreshing for me to hear Parks stand on his take on AI. He's actively doing artistic work right now unlike anyone else on the cast

Saw someone else on here post this take I gotta agree with -

"the people who are the most worried about the sanctity of 'creation' and 'art,' are the people who have never created anything

(those who do not have a single creative bone in their body, but are magically full of opinions)"

Parks is fresh off hitting the Grammy's from his artistry. Joe's an artist, but is years removed from being in any artistic bag. And yet Parks and other artists say they're salivating about what can be cooked up with this tool

He said "Everybody got Fruity Loops, everybody ain't Hit Boy." This point will fly over many heads

So far it's always the people not creating art for a living who are barking the loudest about how AI art is evil

I see your point but the advancement of AI goes beyond that

Every giant step comes with a lot of blood

The iphone is amazing, the internet is amazing, they are also tools that have been used for mass destruction knowingly and not known until much later

Now this is a very fair take and I'm open to changing my mind to being swayed there in the future depending on what happens

At the same time, right now, I still see this as being at the level of a tool that isn't actually pushing artistic boundaries.

Another point made in that last JBP - people talk about how real instrumentalists are now victims of AI

Parks made the point that now, an artist with zero resources from bumfuck Virginia, can now type a few curated keywords and have a whole string section that wasn't possible a few years earlier.

Joe also made this point, in that same topic while trying to push against Parks - when the MPC came out, no one was complaining about horn players being out of jobs anymore

I think it's like Parks said, if you let Quincy Jones run around with this technology, he would still run circles around everyone else just like he did with the tech of his day

  • Apr 18, 2023

i’m an artist/producer and i can say that using AI to make realistic horn/string sections that i don’t have the access to or budget for sounds amazing

parks understands this but the rest of guys don’t, and i can see why. if you don’t make music, you don’t really know the limitations that can come with producing sometimes

  • Apr 18, 2023

also in the parasocial celebrity obsessed culture we live in, there is absolutely no way that AI will replace artists lol

AI can definitely have an impact on sync licensing and passively consumed music, but AI could never replace superstars because people don’t just listen to Drake because of his music, they like and care about him as a person.

as much as the pod has come in and talked about artists whose real life and personality influence their brand, i was baffled they even suggested that

I am shocked Parks took that stance on AI music and couldn't see from the perspective of the guy who is really great at saxophone but doesn't necessarily have a composer brain who can put it together with the trumpet and the flute

parks is coming from the place of “the producer can’t afford to pay someone to play these instruments so AI can help him execute it”

in that scenario he speaks of, the musician would be charging more than producers can afford while not finding a way to create further value for himself. in the scenario he presented, the smart thing that musician could do is attempt to become a touring member of a band as opposed to being a session musician.

or he could just do it for free and negotiate with the producer to split whatever money they make off beats or share the royalties. this situation can only make you obsolete if you allow it to.

But to Ish's point that quite literally devalues the musician. Why would the producer want to split with the musician if with the AI he keeps 100%? Are musicians going to be obsolete? No. But they are most definitely going to be decalued. And that devalue will discourage

And we using singular person examples when the worst of this is going to come from big record labels looking to pay people less and keep a bigger slice of the pie

Is this a grandpa argument against huge technological advancements? Sure. But our grandpa who hated smart phones cause the government was gunna spy on us with it was right lol

Is it 100% bad. No. I can see the 16 year old kid who can't play an instrument put together something magical. I'm just saying you don't need to be a doomsday conspiracy theorist t9 see the downsides. Parks was like "no you're wrong" anytime they had any concerns lol
