nope, didn't read that. from what i gather, there's some characters from higurashi in umineko, but it's nothing significant.

it is a long ass read, but holy f***, is it worth it man

Damn man Definitely reading that later this year, these VNs seem to keep getting better and better somehow lol

Gotta read these popular VNs next that get alot of hype as well:

    • Wonderful Everyday
    • Full Metal Daemon Muramasa
    • Saya no Uta
    • Muv-Luv
    • Cyanotype Daydream
    • White Album 2
    • Rewrite
    • Dies irae
    • Fruit of Grisaia
    • Fate/stay night
    • Rance
    • Kara no Shoujo
    • Tsukihime Remake

I have no idea how they do it man My next "major" VN (which I have already started) is the Utawarerumono series. I beat the "first" game/prequel, and just started up the second one today. Though I did just buy Seventh Lair like ten min ago, so I'm starting that rn Quick read, so I'll have that done tomorrow.

I've heard White Album 2 is STUPID sad (and like top 3 on VNDB, just beating out Umineko), so that might be something I pick up soon Have also heard really good things about that Muramasa one, but haven't looked too deep into it. I'd dive into a lot of these, but a good chunk of em just aren't very high budget so it's a bit of a hurdle to get through. Glad Umineko has mods that patch in voice acting & the PS3 sprites.

Damn Utawarerumono series, took forever to finally find them all under $70 and they're about to release a new game. How is it?

Lol yeah forgot about Seventh Lair, gotta read that asap

Really? Lowkey need to experience another highly acclaimed sad story

Yeah I know, Rance is like 20 entries deep. Don't have time for all of that

The first game (Prelude to the Fallen) was pretty decent, like a 7/10. It's a remake of the original from back in like 2002, so wasn't expecting anything too special.

Heard the second and (particularly) the third are amazing. The third is top 10 on vndb (beating out Fata Morgana ), so it's gotta be at least really good at the bare minimum. Had to buy the second and third on Steam because they took em both down on the PS Store and I'm not dropping $80 on each

Few hours into Seventh Lair and it's been really solid, especially for an April Fools game. The humor is good and the serious stuff is good so far as well (think I'm getting to the point where it's more serious).

    Music is great too

I'll get to White Album 2 at some point, but yeah, I need to read a sad story lol

edit: just finished Seventh Lair. Was actually very good. Dark as hell though

Yeah I saw that on vndb too, definitely curious. Just hoping I can make it thought the combat, same case for 13 Sentinels as well

Wait I thought Seventh Lair was a comedy, didn't know it was going to get dark lmao now I'm even more interested. New music too?

Combat was/is definitely the "rough" part. Not the biggest fan of tactical/grid combat, but it wasn't too bad in the first game (and I've heard that has the worst of three games). I just got to a point where I could get a ton of xp, grinded that spot for a couple hours, then just steamrolled the game. Doing something similar with the other games, but in the form of loading up cheat engine and one shotting everything Was a bit hesitant on 13 Sentinels' combat as well, but it was actually really fun.

As for Seventh Lair, it starts off with some humor, but it definitely gets into the serious/dark stuff pretty heavily (tbh might even be more so than Fata Morgana since it's more grounded stuff, if that makes sense). I think all the music was new, but it's nothing significant; lots of 8bit stuff. The vocal tracks w/ Gao on em are great though.

Steam is telling me I have 5 hours in it, but some of that is me being afk while I'm working, so it's a really quick read. Definitely recommend checking it out.

    Sentinels combat looks interesting though

That’s interesting, prob gonna read it after they make their May announcement, still didn’t get a chance to finish the backstage stuff in Fata Morgana. Stopped like 20 minutes in

@wes how did you play Umineko? Steam Version?

I got both arcs on sale at GOG (both are currently on sale; much cheaper than Steam too)

    gog.com/en/game/umineko_when_they_cry_question_arcs
    gog.com/en/game/umineko_when_they_cry_answer_arcs

I also installed the 07th-Mod to get the updated PS3 sprites/visuals, voice acting, etc., which I would highly recommend getting. Think I just went with the default options for the installation. It's a pretty easy (and interesting) process of installing, so it shouldn't take too long at all.

I don't have many thoughts on it and just thought it was a really solid game. Also probably the most immersive SMT game I have played so far? The world just felt f***ing huge and there were so many NPCs you could talk to, the world building in this game was just insane. Characters were cool too, I really like that you go to travel with a party like a traditional JRPG unlike Nocturne (even if they were kinda useless in combat). That being said my biggest complaint is probably just travelling around the dungeons? I like that its not random encounters like Nocturne but avoiding enemies and trying to attack them to initiate battle was pretty annoying for the most times. It makes me appreciate SMTV a lot more since it feels like they really nailed traversal in that game. Also the final dungeon reminds me of Nocturne with how annoying it was lmao (though no where near as bad).

Theres a lot I like about each game so not sure how I would rank them right now (even Nocturne, as annoying as the dungeons are I think the game has a really unique atmosphere that the other games dont have)

yeah man, the worldbuilding is great in that game. was really cool to go from mikado > naraku > tokyo, then you get the explore all of tokyo. since you liked the traditional party, i imagine you'll really enjoy that in apocalypse since it's dialed up a bit more than it was in IV.

i think traversal in V was ideal. really think it gets better with every mainline game. nocturne had excessive random battles and awful dungeons (very cool designs and atmosphere though), IV was better but still not ideal, especially with that god awful tokyo overworld. IV A is a bit better since you actually know where you're going within tokyo, but it's more of the same as IV. V was just stupid fun to just run around and hit attack in the overworld lol.

each game definitely has their own positives and are great games in their own right. if you liked IV, i think you'll really enjoy IV A
