I’ve just finished this — some thoughts.
I think it was respectable all in all, silly accents aside. Miles and Flora were perfectly splendid in their acting; Ms Grose too. Episode 5 was definitely the strongest point of the show. Which... coincidentally was the Bent Neck Lady in season 1.
The pacing was very slow, and there was so much of the the show that was filled with pointless pieces that it’s only by episode 8 that we actually understand the lore of the manor.
I think the show suffered from the successes of the first season as well. This is nowhere near as strong in a thrilling sense, nor are the base of the story or the individual arcs of the characters as intriguing (Peter Quint; Ms Jessel; Viola’s backstories = all f***ing snoozefests). The Manor didn’t feel particularly alive, and as has been mentioned above, the “gimmicks” throughout (dream swapping and ghosts in back of scenes) wore thin after a few episodes. But what it it is strong in was creating a very tragic gothic romance. The endings of many of the characters were very poignant.
Respectable 6.5-7/10.
gotta disagree with some of the takes here. This was better than Hill House for me 100%. tbh Hill House had a couple of good jump scares but like I just feel like the whole 'haunted' thing here was a lot more unnerving. They did drag it a little with the memories towards the end though.
At the end I was way more satisfied than I was with HH. With HH I honestly didn't even understand why the house was haunted or what resolved it. Here the reasons and the resolutions were a lot clearer, and a lot more satisfying.

Definitely not better but no where near as bad as the comments are trying to make it seem, It's not even bad lmao
It’s highly likely that the intention here was not to be THAT damn scary lmao

its kinda obvious he would say that but at the same time during the show/
they literally talk about how its more of a love story and not a horror story
And id have to agree
not in love with it like hill house but ive already had nightmares of The Lady From The Lake so it had an impact
Just finished this yesterday.
Haunting of Hill House is one of my favorite things Flanagan has done, but unfortunately Bly Manor is on the opposite end of that for me... I think Flanagan doing an adaptation of James' work is actually a great fit for him, on paper — but the execution just felt lacking to me.
Still love him no doubt

Not sure if it really made a difference, but he only directed the pilot here. Idk if that means this wasn’t still 100% his vision though as opposed to Hill House where he did every episode

I didnt even realize that tbh — i just assumed he did every ep just like Hill House. Maybe that's why Bly Manor felt so underbaked.
