DNA, Element, Humble, XXX = a whopping 4 songs with that vibe. An album from almost six years ago. You really a point there , salute lol. Let me guess YAH and FEAR are bangers too.

DAMN is literally designed as one "single" type song one "album cut" type song go back and look.

    Album cut type
    Single type
    Album cut type
    Single type

I get the concept like I think sun kil moon is good I’m just not in that mood a lot so I don’t spin it nearly as much as I do tony shhnow

That being said I don’t care for the Kendrick album at all really

    sun kil moon is dope

Songs that have the most replay value for me on Morale/Steppers:

    United In Grief
    Worldwide Steppers
    Die Hard
    Father Time
    Rich Interlude + Rich Spirit
    Silent Hill
    Savior Interlude + Savior
Auntie Diaries (The production on this is incredible, reminds me of TPAB)
    Mr. Morale

Still an incredible album to me

    LMAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOO

I've hated both of those artist and lean towards mysterious music

Just the phrasing is crazy to me I had to double take

Like enjoying art for art sake is bad & “media consumption” is good is the wave we’re on ? On the music forum? full speed ahead straight to hell

the phrasing is like that for a reason

it's to paint the picture of someone enjoying the medium of music as an art piece and forgetting the main point of music

    which is consumption / enjoyability

most of the time people do this they've failed at their own creative crafts and have gone down to the critique route.

the artistic value of a song should always come second to the consumption, we're talking melodies, Instrumentation, and danceability not theories and symbolism.

yeah and some people enjoy music with “theories” and “symbolism” it adds onto the music listening experience and pushes the creative medium further than just sheer dumb enjoyability

if artists sacrificed everything for enjoyability and danceability, we’d have a lot less innovative and interesting music

yeah you're not getting it and becoming offended that I said theories and symbolism come second.

    take for example

    Andre 3000 - Hey Ya

Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine

    Gil Scot Heron - Discography

you can't deny the musical aspects of delivering your theories and symbolism because otherwise your not making music

your making an art piece which is cool but it's an art piece.

not offended at all, im not very partial to conceptual projects at all, your critiques just don’t really make any sense esp. for an artist like kendrick who has shown he can seamlessly blend his messages and concepts in a musically pleasing package

my point is that yes, music is made to be enjoyed, it is good that there are people who make accessible and easily digestible music, and it’s also good that there are people who try to tie it with a message or some sort of concept

i don’t agree with your idea that people who want more “artsy” stuff is ruining the medium, if anything it is the absolute inverse and it’s pretty much why we get a “is rap dying?” thread every other week here + why music in general has felt a bit of an emptiness, because in order to pop off or stay in the mainstream, you have to have a meme or some sort of trend for your song + sound bites for tik tok

that isn’t art, that’s a product my guy

your previous posts on the first page lends itself to the idea

no. you can scroll below that post to get a better understanding.

however i stand behind my post a 100%. what's Happening to music has to deal with a lot more than just creating a product. (deals with money streaming and the death of a platform that revolved around media consumption first before theories and symbolism)
we're not witnessing just a lack of entertaining ideas in music, we've witnessed the erasure of a barrier to entry for music which has effects on our whole product.

that's a convo for another thread.

this kendrick album sums up my first post beautifully. Forget kendrick's past works on this album. Review the album in full for what was displayed. Most of the time the praise for this albums comes in the topics presented and the dialougues created.

However our consumption of the media is all over the place and people are choosing songs that have the best blend of what was stated in my first post/ second post.

    MMTBS - Great Art
MMTBS - Great Couple of Songs

well then we’re at an impasse because im pretty sure we’re talking past each other and just see art differently

streaming plays a hand in it, but i am of the opinion that people with the mindset of distilling art to sheer danceability and enjoyability incentivizes artists to s*** out fast food music it’s a mixture

i don’t see how you can remove Kendrick’s past works for this particular project when knowing the concepts and substance presented on TPAB and GKMC inform you of some of the content on Mr. Morale (the whole no savior angle, good kid maad city tour, flourished on them stages etc)

i do agree with you that people often talk about the overall message/concept of the project itself versus the actual music, i personally think mr morale is simply a good project and is marginally better than DAMN (albeit, im having second thoughts nowadays, DAMN might barely just be better imo) i think it has some good/great songs on it, but i feel like it could’ve really used a trim

Understandable, but that's a whole different conversation entirely.

When it comes to music though , the music always comes first.

  • Nov 20, 2022

mr morale is just his least replayable project. and you gotta ask how important that is to an album. I personally don’t think it’s as good as GKMC TPAB or damn.
