    They're not suppose to be about the zeitgeist or a popularity contest lol, in theory it's suppose to be based only on skill of the craft

    There’s a reason why none of the people who win the award actually take them home the same night, and that’s because the award is decided by relationships with the board, not the music or impact of an artist. If it was all about music, you’d get an engraved trophy the day of the event. Not a placeholder, and them pulling a name out of an envelope or a card.
    Even the Steve Harvey s*** I think wasn’t his mistake, he just couldn’t publicly admit what really went down.
    If you piss someone off the night of, it’s gonna go from “you’re set to win x award” to “the winner is Beck”
    A lot of the people who perform at these shows do so to curry favor for future awards

    You see how they made an example out of The Weeknd some years back
    It’s really some nonsense
    But it helps with marketing

    Same thing happened to Kanye in 2022 tbh. There’s no way Jon Baptiste was actually supposed to win that year lol

    I'd argue the Grammy's aren't even here to do that. None of these examples needed a trophy to solidify their popularity or impact. The charts and accolades were their evidence already.

    I basically cared until 2017 but I was thinking about Beyonce today and listening to her albums (for some reason) and I thought to myself why she didn't win for self-titled and Lemonade? I even tried listen to Morning Phase and 25 and it still made no sense.

    So it sent me down a rabbit hole...

    Well yes, it’s an industry prestige award, not a zeitgeist award. You can go to billboard or mtv for that

    But what is defined as prestige when comes to entertainment? Something that captures the current moment and its politics.

    Think Parasite winning BP at the Oscars, that captured a moment.

    That's pure metrics. There was something to be said for each album that lost in terms of cultural conservation and critical acclaim.

    You telling me that Beck's Morning Phase had more craft then self-titled when Beyonce dropped with no notice, no physicals, music videos for every song and basically changed album promos for the music industry overnight. That takes craft as well.

    Answer to your second question i’d assume is because of it being (presented as) more craft or merit based which is the answer to your first question
