The complaining makes sense tho, and “omg so much destruction” meant more than that. Doing clear and intentional 9/11 imagery on steroids with Superman of all characters where’s he’s more focused on combat than saving lives is a NASTY optic, no way around it.

Now it’s easy for us nerds to go “fuck yeah! Superman in DBZ action let’s go!” and call people who don’t like it soft, but…the general public wasn’t soft for their response they just weren’t biased. In reality the final fight in MOS is just:

    • 9/11 on steroids
    • Superman doesn’t save lives
    • weirdly choreographed fighting and bad cgi

It’s even worse when the biggest movie of the previous year was a superhero movie where a bunch of heroes are in a very similar situation and their main priority is saving civilians

Isn't the whole point of the sequence is that, that's his first year as a superhero and the first time having a battle like that so he's inexperienced, which results in the end where he kills zod to save a life. Which then goes into BVS where he prioritize saving lives.

For this specific take on him being more grounded and realistic, that character arc makes sense

This is fair but it evidently left a bad taste in people’s mouths - the same people that loved The Avengers and the Transformers movies - so MOS had to be doing something wrong, not only in the sequence itself but in the film making a sequence like that justifiable up until that point

What you’re saying is the intent and idea, and it makes sense, but the execution wasn’t there

But following the intent and idea of that character arc. What else could they change about the sequence's execution tho that accomplishes the same objective

That’s on the filmmaking/framing and writing. And at that point it wouldn’t just be the execution of the sequence but the execution of everything leading up to it. If you want people to buy into and be okay with the idea of “this is a realistic and inexperienced Superman, so he’ll be accountable for extraterrestrial 9/11 and not save lives” you gotta make the writing and framing much more tight to communicate something that wild

Cause let’s be real, it’s a wild concept to get people to wrap their heads around. And for “realism” I don’t think people look at gloominess and destruction in itself as realism, especially when you still have blue and red spandex Superman flying around with laser eyes in a DBZ fight

Oh for sure. Raging about it was lame but at the same time it’s like…if the same mfs who were fine with Transformers 1 and 3 and The Avengers thought your city destruction was too much…

You were doing too much lol

Idk I kinda dug the idea of a bunch of ppl on superman power level invading the city leaving him kinda powerless to just casually smack em around without any real collateral damage

But then again I'm not a big superman fan

What you’re saying would’ve actually been fine with most people but the thing is the movie does have real collateral damage and even goes out of its way to depict realistic collateral damage and civilians suffering in the middle of it. Hell, the opening of BVS doubles down on this being the intent as well

I give it points for Superman going to stop the terraforming ship but it isn’t enough with everything else we see

So what you re saying is it needed more scenes of him directly protecting random civilians in danger for those scenes to be acceptable?

Movie was initially finished back in 2021, there were 2 separate sets of reshoots in 2022 and even some early this year, James Gunn Frankensteined this thing to fit his future dcu plans
