The solution is to stop watching movies "made for black people"

These movies are definitely not made for black people lol

I'm dark as hell and half Nigerian, that's why colorism and intra racial hate bothers me. I got a lot of s*** growing up about my background, hair, lips etc.

It's all casually thrown around and ignored.

Oh thats why you think everyone is lightskin 😭

There is less "dark as hell" or akon colored people in media representation if you said something similar to that more people would agree.

Some groups nowadays just feel like their pet issue is bigger than the collective cause and actively divide all of us

Cause deep down we don’t feel the need to fight for a collective cause. We’re kinda content now oddly enough

Most people are too confortable or alienated to care fr

However I'd add that colorism is apart of that collective cause it's just that some people brains can't handle discussing a multitude of topics related to one issue

It's like they can't read a book past its title when there are paragraphs that make up chapters that make up the book

This is especially an issue among black women. Any black woman perceived as attractive has to be light skin. Almost always.

They say she's the most beautiful woman in Hollywood right now

I didn't want to go to that extreme. The Tyrese remark wasn't the original point.

I was watching that trash ass movie Boomerang with Eddie Murphy and noticed literally all the leading women were light skinned-

They even put a bunch of makeup on Grace Jones to make her lightskinned for the movie. Movie dog s***.

It was ofc written by two white dudes so I thought back to how many instances there were of this happening over and over.

This is how it is irl. Dark skin men are seen as threatening which in the real world translates to “he’s scary” but in a fantastical medium like film translates to “he’s sexy and dangerous”. Hence darker skin men are more desirable as leads in film. Both come from a harmful place

But the thread got outta whack and some perceived this fact to be a “well dark skin men DO get benefits” claim

The thread is accurate. This is an issue, and especially an issue for black women.

It is becoming less of an issue for black men in more recent years, but it is an issue that still remains. There are examples, but it is not really enough.

  • Oct 12, 2021

In Hollywood (film specifically) OP’s premise applies to black women but not really black men (unless he only considers really dark as darker skin, which it isn’t but I understand his perspective based on being ostracized for being so dark)

This nuance needs to be understood because blanketing what happens irl or blanketing what happens with women over men doesn’t help in having this particular discussion

I think it still is an issue for black men who go through the justice system or in the job market - but that's mainly controlled by white institutions

For black/brown women sadly it be "your own" "men" participating (alongside the rest of the world) in perpetuating the colorists tropes or acting like it doesn't exist so u just kinda left there between a rock and hard place

even just raising awareness is met with defensiveness.... like yikes

And beauty standards are more an issue that socially affects women as well

S***appeal for men too like that was my whole point btw they always getting a lighter dude to be like the lovely heart throb

It's why Boris Kodjoe even has a career he can't act for s***. That's what I meant with Tyrese, niggas assumed I meant lead role but like nah.

You're right that there are many dark skinned models. But it still is an issue on some level. Black models cannot be natural. Maria Borges was the first model to walk the runway with an afro for Victoria's Secret for example. That was in 2018.

because we keep supporting whatever they put out

Tenet and many movies with black leads outside of slavery and suffering exist

so why do we crave seeing our suffering

Guarantee you it’s not us watching this s***

Yeah theres definitely still progress to be made.

Some of these movies be having white casting directors, to them biracial particularly women, will be more palatable to them. However even in some of these films im sure with black staff these issues are still present so just keep an eye out!

Idek even know who Boris kodjoe is lmao

but after googling he def looks like he got pretty privilege à la shemar Moore, people who get casted to be eye candy

darker black men have been that too tho like Morris chestnut (Idk if that happens as much as with lighter men)
I don't see the same balance for women, I'd say men have it easier in that department
