Ronald Bell’s (RIP) to be exact.
Rachid Bayyan, in 1998 came out with Prototype.
Whenever I recall my top 5 R&B albums of all time IRL and say the reason Innervisions is #2 is because of this album, niggas (understandably) flip tf out until I show em this.

What mask should I don today?
What role shall I play today?
Who will I fool today?
Tell me which fool will fall prey?

embrace my ugly, showered me with praise
created a love so fruitless
gave me your poison
and then you walked away. WHEW.
(Please please do not let possibly one of the most non-fitting cover art detract you from one of the best r&b albums of all time.)
Great writing, a-fucking-mazing singing, and amazing production that goes everywhere from jungle s*** to soul to indian s*** to rock s*** to even some french s*** (yes, nigga got a whole song in french)
We have this talk on this forum all the time about how a massive slip in pen game is why R&B kinda lacking. When you hear joints like this autobiographical song dealing with father neglect that made a nigga that had his father in his life feel like will smith hugging Uncle Phil

so confused, my anger was my gift my plight
I learned that a man must always fight
Or this song about a washed up actress finding solitude/peace in feeding pigeons

Or probably the best song about the perspective of a blind person

Man loves a man, he cannot see
Values the air he breathes
And we all believe in a God with no face
But the magnum opus is the last track where you can hear the nigga passion as it feels like his voice bout to break towards the end of the song as he’s literally singing away all the hateful things ppl used to say about him growing up

I grew up on this album. The label (like a lot of 90s “alternative” black artists) didnt know how to market Rachid (and made the while still good but prolly low point of the album “Pride” as the single) and so the album never really made noise and bro got dropped.
It’s really sad cause works like this shoulda been championed more. That thing that ppl say is missing in modern R&B, this album was flooding full of it. Actually got to speak to him on instagram after a tiktok i made about the album a year ago went “viral” bro was mad cool and thanked me for giving him flowers.
I HIGHLY recommend you check this album out whenever you get a chance.
@AudioConsulting @YoungNastyShawty @Brave @SlapFiend think yall might f*** wit this
Also any french niggas on here know what this nigga saying? Been like…20 years and I been lost lol

The vocal mixing on some of these tracks r so dated but i like it. Also the album cover not even that bad

I will say it was a bit hyperbolic but I do feel the cover art portrayed the exact opposite of what Rachid/the music was and I think it played a part in prototype not really sticking well.
thanks op gonna check out whole album i always loved charade from this

Wtf this is niceeee
I’m so on the mood for some pure 90s R&B today. Special times. Might listen to some old Janet Jackson s*** or even Mariah Carey.
Never listened to a Brandy project.
Maybe Aaliyah.
Those melodies

Good looks OP
Gonna peep on my plane ride home
Bro has 548 listeners only a month on Spotify. Crazy. This is so underground and I love it.
What a great thread.

Good find
He posted bout his pops favorably when he died on his ig, hope they were able to mend bridges beforehand
Thats why I hate that cover. Totally gives off the wrong vibe that the album really going for tbh.
I wouldnt be surprised if that was the case. I will say that was the the case for a lot of R&B artists in the 90s that did multi genre filled works. They would be deemed “unmarketable” and the label wouldn’t know what to do with em and just drop em (e.g. rachid, dionne farris, david ryan harris)
one of the greats
