I'm thinking of doing a combination playlist/article for RYM where I write pieces about their best songs after the Smile fallout, late 1967-1977. 30 songs maybe? It'll for sure include the following albums:

    Smiley Smile
    Wild Honey
    Friends
    20/20
    Sunflower
    Surf's Up
    Holland
    Love You

it determines how we determine genius though in my view. Is genius one's technical skill on an instrument that is typically virtuoso level, is genius making the most simple songs accesible or is genius a package of everything?

To me genius is the innate ability to move people through your creations and being able to craft pieces for others that also move people, technical skill is worthless if people aren't moved by it, just look at yngwie malmsteen on guitar, guy is a f***ing machine yet guitar players would rather a***yse and listen to hendrix, clapton, van halen or gilmour all of which are less technically renowned on the guitar.

the BBs and beatles are both genius imo, they were able to craft numerous songs throughout multiple eras that moved people, influenced people and became engrained in pop culture, past and present, who is more genius is a pointless question because being a genius can't be measured
that's a bunch of bs from me but that's just how i feel when it comes to discussing genius

    Yeah but also no

We change the meaning of what a genius is to stick it to our favorite artists

I agree with what your saying but that kumbaya stuff isn't true to the defintion of a genius from a purely pragmatic perspective

I think what y'all hinting at is "creative genius"

Which is also not high on the list of things people care about - casual listeners will excuse popstars not writing their songs just showing up to the studio and sing (if they're even singing)

Like Whitney Houston put out music that defined a generation, highly skilled, influenced those that followed but she's not a genius not even considered creative one..... but would still fit your definition in alot of ways (that's why I don't agree)
