in an alternate universe smile releases before sgt peppers and the beatles are forced to scrap/shelve sgt and we're sitting around wondering what it would've been like

it eats me that this isn’t reality

everytime someone regurgitates the tale of "strawberry fields is what caused smile to be shelved"

most tired talking point ever and so many beatles stans use it during debates

How did they even come to that conclusion?

Aren't you doing the same as them by oversimplifiying Beatles history? Or are they really trend hoppers

Paul McCartney a bitter b**** though imo

Quincy jones said Beatles can't even tune guitars

they definitely borrowed alot of trends/styles once the hippy revolution started to take over in the mid 60s, not to discredit someone like george harrison, macca or george martin's talents and vision but it's always been pretty clear they started steering as far left as they could from their public image

they’re good at it they write good songs and were skilled to shift over so good over the trends don’t get me wrong

it’s a great form of talent that isnt given and a lot of work

    but it’s not genuis

Yeah the riffs I student demonstration were def ripped of another song, I've heard that before (idk which one but it's a famous one)

How does he make the other song irrelevant though? wouldn't it be like sampling where it can give new life or expose the older song to a new audience?

yeah its more a kind of generic blues riffing, i dont really think of that type of thing as "ripping off" since part of the blues tradition consistent of basically "ripping off"/borrowing/referencing/covering from other songs. its kind of a standard that anyone can use. im sure maybe you already know this though
this is one of them and probably the foremost example, so many songs use similar riff to this one,

and also this elmore james style riff with countless variations

once strawberry fields released brian supposedly heard it on the radio and he pulled over and cried and thought "this is it, this is what i needed to do" so alot of beatles stans have used his various quotes over the years to try and push the narrative that strawberrry fields was so good it forced brian to quit making smile and eventually led to him spiralling out of control

the thought of one song pushing someone to insanity where he scraps his last 2 years worth of work is quite hilarious when you try to think about it

yeah it was this one song, it totally wasn't the fact that his bandmates were split on the music, mike love hated it, the labels were inpatient and kept cutting funds, VDP leaving, stress etc

The Night Was So Young is one of those off the cuff pop masterpieces a person wishes they could write but you can't write something like that. It just happens. Simple, intimate and gorgeous.

quincy jones would be so much more respected and likeable if he didn't keep trying to undermine and take credit away from MJ

every couple years he drops some quotes about how MJ jacked this song, quincy did this, the song was bad etc

it was shut down bc mike love didn’t like it thought it was too depressing (which is something that still has happened all the way to their final album in 2012)

thankfully it was recorded in 1971

    Like almost every global popstar?

That's why people talk about "eras" in regards to certain musicians, it's damn near an expectation to have different ones and to reinvent thyself as a pop musician (today at least)

Was the music bad or is image the sole problem?

I cannot f*** with the Beatles hate in this thread. We are blessed to live in a time when we can enjoy artists as great as the Beach Boys and Beatles simultaneously. Think of how many tens of billions of people missed out on them.

For anyone who doubts Paul McCartney's prodigious talents and puts all his success on George Martin, I can just point to Ram, recorded by himself from scratch. Influential bedroom pop masterpiece, crazy variety!

    It's all good my friends.

i'm not well read enough in beatles lore and history to the point where i can discuss their early years to 1965, but from the docs and articles ive read over the years and on forums it seems that macca was pushing for the band to become more creative and diverse and stop being a basic popular band

i wouldnt take any of the crazy quincy jones stuff too seriously, he pretty much backtracked on the beatles stuff anyway. he knows damn well paul isnt the worst bass player hes heard and is actually great lol

in that interview he was claiming Ringo was sucking on drums during the sessions for his Sentimental Journey album which....Ringo didn't even play drums on

he claimed some BS about jimi hendrix too saying he was scared to play with jazz musicians and that one of the Microsoft co founders (!) was as good at guitar as hendrix

it ain’t hate i stated they’re great at their songwriting capacities and the styles they picked on over the years, i was just stating what i call actual genuis

it’s not like the beatles praise isn’t a given over the bbs, look at all the ktt2 thread drooling over the beatles on and on there’s nothing for the bbs outside this thread - this is what im saying

i have no issues with paul and his talent, he was the driving force behind the beatles in my eyes atleast and his longevity after the band split is enough proof to me to highlight his creativity
