When Deadline confirmed Dance, the writer (Kroll) tweeted like an hour later saying he never heard of any serious contenders passing other than Stellan
Jeff was making it seem like actors were coming into talks, reading scripts and rejecting. And then when Dance signed on he completely missed the scoop lol

It might be intentionally. Long Halloween - the biggest comic influence on The Batman - has a lot of Godfather homages, the cinematography and look of The Batman was inspired by The Godfather (along with Se7en ofc) and look at the title format for the sequel. Bruce has an inverse Michael moral journey from vengeance to heroism, and I’m sure that much like Michael’s further descent into coldness in part 2 will be echoed in Bruce’s further ascension into being a heroic savior as he becomes less cold in his personal life
Then there’s the full lean into the mob underworld of Gotham in the Reeves Batman saga
