im sorry what?
Basically this is what's happening in the simplest form
Basically old media wants a cut of the profits and access of the algorithm that Google
This dangerous since the 3 or 4 big news corps (fairfax/9, news corp, 7 media, cbs/10) get access to this algorithm which they can manipulate to their pleasure. News media in here is pretty s*** as it is and will get way worse if this pass as it will diluted the already s*** media and f*** over independent. Google benefits on open media since it makes them more money + gives consumers more sources and perspectives

ehh f*** em all
heres my messy stream of thoughts:
google keeps people in their own personal bias bubble just like the rest of the media.
if they made google do all this s*** for the media i feel like theres a chance they would just stop providing media sites in search results out of spite. Plus why would google continue showing any media sites if it's a major inconvenience to them. That would be a dream imo lol, I see no reason why I should search an issue and be provided with the same 3 news sites telling me how to think at the top of the results. Idk about you but thats my anecdotal experience with googling current affairs
I dont know how much money they think google really makes off presenting news sites in searches but I think it might be overestimated lol. Or at least much more indirect and hard to measure
I always think back to that kanye sacramento speech: "google lied to you. Facebook lied to you."
As far as I understand, big websites are always going to have better SEO than smaller ones if they're smart about it, so I dont know how/to what extent this "algorithm" stuff would actually change their practice regarding that. From what I read in the ACCC draft the media would be able to read the algorithm but not edit it.
Imo we should take it one step further and make the entire google algorithm entirely public.
It's funny, before the world wide web went down this commercial path, many would have assumed it would free journalism from commercialism but it seems it's basically done the opposite. I wonder if there's even a solution.
Idk if i really understand this issue properly, it all just seems so f***ing stupid to me. Half of me just wants traditional companies and their practices to adapt already without legislative interference and the other half knows that mindlessly embracing a technological free market is horrible for society. I'm very divided and it's a complicated issue so idk

do you trust ACCC they are governments back pocket more then even news corp it benefits them if this law passes
thats the problem thats why i support goggle since they provide a more open internet and what they actually want
this is huge and reason why google will fight to the death to support this
F*** ACCC and f*** google they both as bad each other don't get me wrong but google supports my interest since as more clicks on different website = more money for them
thats basically how i think about it need to read the bill in full

doesn't help that all the supposed left learning media are ran by ex LNP stooges
doesn't help ALP under albo is not exciting and greens while i like their policies idk just feels like their too narrow minded and in the past compromised good labor policies (as seen in the gillard era)
honestly i live in the seat where scomo sits and its literally safest lnp seat in the country so doesn't really matter what i vote for
might see if their is any alternatives to labor/greens out there because i wanna support left learning candidate
f*** shorten would been good tbh
