Creative Visions Music Group, Sonder, "Illusions"- 8.5/10
I had probably the hardest time grading this one. The initial trailers were super vibey and the interview short and to the point- a well constructed rollout. Sonder is a group that I personally think is yet to reach their peak, and I wanted to see whether this album would cap them off. But the tracklist is beautiful- that 4 minute range is perfect for Sonder and the shorter tracks would be akin to R&B hits that fit the theme of this album extremely well. I liked the constant emphasis of rebirth and reflection- a very peaceful place to be in for a "coffee shop type vibe". My conflict was trying to figure out what it was missing- whether it could have used more tracks, less tracks, whether I would have liked to see more Soulquarian participation in the creation of this, but I have to say that any of those issues are fairly minor when I consider how well rounded the 10 track format is. Wayne feature was a nice selection. Production choices were PERFECT- imagine how focused a studio with those names would be. Love this one.
Lost Boy Records, The Weeknd, "destinesia"- 9.5/10
THIS IS THE ONE I had been waiting for, from the time you dropped the first single. Anyone who's listened to the Weeknd and MDM knows how good a completely distorted and broken down Abel is. It plays to his strengths as an artist rather than a vocalist, and it's beautiful. Those production choices scream maximalist with a touch of complete chaos. One word- badass. (side note- I'm a bit of a sucker for all those producers, but personal taste aside, really great choices). It's got everything anyone who's ever been a fan of his saga would love. The shorter tracklist with the A-list features has me thinking this like an MDM that doesn't miss on anything. Really liked the track descriptions and formatting. This would have easily been a 10, except- and you're not going to be happy about this- you're supposed to be a NEW LABEL, not XO. So much XO imagery in the rollout (it's even credited on the cover?) was such a blatant rookie mistake that I couldn't really ignore it despite how AWESOME this s*** was. Fire
Dripset Records, Rick Ross, "Still Teflon"- 10/10
Yep. This is the 10/10 from the first round. ROZAY has had one of the most interesting careers of the past decade, and any continuation of that is guaranteed to be a thrill. So believe me when I say this exactly fits Ross to a T. His albums shine when he finds a consistency in production and thought out features. This has both. Ye, JUSTICE League, Just Blaze, Metro- it's an excellent mix of two kinds of Ross, the luxurious and royal sound versus the rougher trap sound. Rollout took his lifestyle aspects and went crazy with it. I loved every part of what was done with the IG posts. Expected a longer track and you delivered on King of Miami- as a single track some of the best s*** I've seen. The don has somewhat fallen short of other bosses of the rap game like Jay or Wayne because he hasn't found consistency and finally, I see it on this one especially with the choices on the references. Malcom X imagery and inspiration brought it home with a complete concept. A longer album that I see on the same level as masterpieces like Late Registration and To Pimp a Butterfly. That's a debut right there

Ol' Goodfellow Stories, Rihanna, "Coast 2 Coast"- 9/10
Probably the most impressive formatting I've seen in this game thus far. In terms of mainstream hype no one has quite the same effect that Rihanna has- so there were a lot of things you could have done with this album. Yet you come through with QUINCY JONES- a rightful legend in the industry- as the executive producer. I was initially skeptical of this pairing in some respects- like would it be entirely derivative of the 70s soul era or would it be some new s***, but the reference tracks really brought this one home. Listening to them in order really felt like traversing into a whole ass landscape, and I feel like that would have been what Rihanna was looking to do with this project. My one point off is the features go a little overboard- it would be awesome to have Ri with so many A-listers but at a point it's overproducing like on the Coast 2 Coast remix (some of my favorite producers ever but idk if we really needed them all on that one). A fantastic and satisfying continuation of Rihanna's saga.
@CaliKhalElCaliban
that remix was just something for me tbh.
