  • After currents I truly thought Kevin could do no wrong, and even with the mixed reception of the slow rush, I loved that album and I didn’t feel like the quality of music degraded even though he didn’t cross into any new territory sonically. But boy that deadbeat album is urban outfitters indie cafe music all day. There’s no edge, only musical choices that leave me questioning wtf he’s been doing these past 4 years. But bro is at his peak popularity at the same time and still riding the wave of currents and gaining new fans every day because of it. It’s like his Graduation, it’s gonna be the gift that keeps on giving and allows him to drop stinkers without killing his career entirely.
So who else is saving indie psych rock? I’m fw Magdalena bay heavy rn but what u guys like?

    Sadly yeah kinda

Like 2 that went hard tho

  • Love Tame Impala, been a fan since Innerspeaker

The songwriting on Deadbeat was unmemorable and he sounded like an out of his depth amateur in that genre. It is what it is. At least he's trying new things? I just think he nailed electronic sounds more successfully on the previous album with One More Year.

And yes, Magdalena Bay is probably my favorite indie band right now.

totally agree, it was bafflingly bad I still kinda can't believe he would drop something so lifeless and void of creativity. happy we got dracula out of it though and lmao it's funny you say magdalena bay cus i'm starting to believe she really was the reason he was so great early on. new album is completely sauceless

edit: just realized i confused magdalena with melody's echo chamber lol

  • yes very forgettable not his best stuff

lol @ this reductive nothing burger ass critique off the album, but glazing lifeless ass magdalena bay who literally stem from the ripple effect that an album like currents made

one thing with the reception to this album is that it's actually really funny how every drop of kevin's since lonerism has consistent initial wave of divisiveness amongst his fanbase due to a shift in sound

and i'm not even saying that all the reception to this album will fall under that or should, but it's just funny how without fail that has happened everytime

nah it was actually really enjoyable. a couple TERRIBLE tracks though

Dracula, Obsolete and No Reply are top tier TI songs

  • most disappointing album of the decade for me so far

    disagree. was a solid 7.5

  • yeah man idk what happened to kevin to make him lose the sauce like this. i get where he was trying to take his sound, but his approach was just so surface level and bland and the songwriting was absolutely god awful man

  • He’s dropped classics for years, one mid project is alright

pretty much how i feel about it too

really fascinating of a project with kind of how much—outside of dracula—it subverts a lot of the airtight perfectionism that defined his previous works with more looser compositions, but still contains a lot of kevin's DNA as a producer/artist

it definitely plays like an artist being hit with actually serious creative block for the first time in his career and kind of just attempting to use that to his advantage

i find the majority of this enjoyable (especially within the context of a front to back listen), but i won't like pretend like more than a few songs don't take a bit to finally get somewhere interesting

idk i think i just really find the overtly negative reactions to this project to be quite bizarre

and this is coming from someone who's been a massive tame impala fan in the past and has loved everything they've done before this

is deadbeat some misunderstood masterpiece? i don't think so, but i also believe that there's way too many moments of brilliance on here for it to be as written off as it has been by some

  • Mar 1

Yeah the album was pretty disappointing

Had a few really good songs though

    also, one more thing

idk why niggas are tripped out about the lyrics on here

kevin has NEVER been some crazy ass lyricist at all

i really dare ppl to read out the lyrics to lonerism and currents without any of the music to go along with it lol. i love both of those albums a lot, but they are easily very juvenile portrayals of things like love and relationships given the age in which he was when they were released

if anything, i believe that the slow rush honestly contains some of his best and most mature songwriting of his career

like it's very telling growth that the guy who penned a lot of the angsty tunes on lonerism could write a song like posthumous forgiveness

End of summer is fire, and I thought it was the start of a new wave for him. I was disappointed that ended up being his best executed edm song, while all the other attempts sounded amateur at best.

grew up with techno and house music, I thought the album was amazing and innovative to his approach to music. It's not that it's ass, you just can't relate to it.
    innerspeaker his best project btw
