surrealism is great right until they do a whole episode explaining all the surrealism
what's the thread consensus
sadly, it's a miss for me
great cinematography and performance from Fishback and some of the special guests, but the storytelling was just too disjointed imo
by the third episode I thought the killing got repetitive. there was nothing at stake, Dre was gonna kill some innocent person and get away with it, and there was no conflict or real growth for the character
I liked episode 4 and thought we were about to see some growth or reflection from Dre cause of the therapy sessions but that quickly and predictably ended
then episode 6 went completely off the rails. did y'all like that? cause I had the same issue with it as I had with the Atlanta Goofy Movie episode that a lot of people loved. never wanna see a fake reality show forced into a season again. just a cheap storytelling trick to force exposition and character background into a show that lacked it. it wasn't the least bit funny, interesting or unique imo
finale was a let down too and too many unrealistic scenes
just a show that lacked stakes, growth, and tension. excessive violence and some surprise guest stars couldn't make up for it. Atlanta is one of my favorite shows but this is nowhere near it imo
tldr: 👎
unfortunately accurate
Geeze should I even keep going?
I might not
nah nah always if you enjoying it watch for yourself
enjoyed watching it but wasn't in love with this either. Not something I'd come back to tbh.
Episode 4 done baby. F*** man. F*** Dre lol. The one chance she had to be better
it is that but its also the literal explanation to so many things that are touched upon but never directly explained throughout the show until now dre's real connection with marissa, the spilling the milk thing, her desire for constant connection with someone, why she isnt connected with her family
the rest of the show plays all these as things they might want you to think about and the documentary episode just throws it all out the window and gives you cement answers but none of them are really crazy enough to justify some big reveal it all feels so strange coming from the team behind atlanta especially when this was one of their notes for that show and is something theyve done so well before

I am late but again this is exactly it for me. I had avoided spoilers besides seeing episode 6 some people loved others didn't . Episode 6 was very eye roll and took away any momentum they had to tell the audience basically everything. I was kind of shocked they would do that. Made much of the past 5 episodes feel even more redundant
Episode 4 done baby. F*** man. F*** Dre lol. The one chance she had to be better
LMFAO keep watching
Wasn’t really surreal outside of brief moments between Dre’s interactions with Nijah which I felt were deserving moments bc of her obvious delusion. I guess you might’ve enjoyed it more had we seen Dre bite Nijah or her actually be apprehended during the concert?
There is no way you are serious . Surrealism wasn't the problem with the execution of the plot
what exactly was surreal about this show?
cause I'm always down for surrealism, it's one of my favorite genres. part of the reason I loved S3 of Atlanta so much
my issues with this show have nothing to do with surrealism, I probably would've liked it more if it was more surreal
You watch recent Atlanta? This made me want to catch up on it to see what he was cooking in final season
Actually no I haven't. Been meaning to but kinda lost interest
the real story of Marissa Jackson is actually just an urban legend. :khaled2:
On the topic of the theory though… I know I’m gonna end up ranting a lot here lmao bear with me
I think it’s somewhat likely she killed Marissa. Marissa is clearly reaching a point where she’s not really getting along too well with Dre. She’s got a boyfriend, got opportunities and new friends, and is intentionally leaving Dre out of plans to go out and what not. Marissa has also grown out of the Stan life that Dre is still fully into.
As the series goes on we find out Dre has major abandonment issues. Marissa abandons Dre, rejects her offer to see Nijah, and is choosing Khalid over Dre. Dre tells Marissa he’s a cheater and expects this to make Marissa stay. Marissa leaves anyways.
Then, Dre takes off and goes to the club, seemingly drinking (forgets the last night) despite it being mentioned throughout that she doesn’t drink. Hooks up with a guy who we never see again despite her being a virgin and never really showing an interest in men without it benefitting her chance to see Nijah. And then she gets dozens of texts from Marissa who now suddenly needs Dre more than ever, because Dre was right about Khalid, and Marissa is talking about how important Nijah is to her - despite the previous scene suggesting Marissa was out of her Nijah Stan phase. Then her phone is coincidentally found in the otherwise completely emptied house - and throughout the series Marissa still texts Dre.
Lastly the parallels to Rashida, with basically the same argument leading to her murder immediately followed by Dre diving fully into Nijah Stan mode the same night.
TLDR: Dre is an unreliable narrator, and there are suggestions throughout that she did it.
This got to be the most agonizing writer trope of all time but especially when it comes to mental health .
Unreliable narrator secretly murders in their sleep is just so f\*\*\*ing tired.
Actually no I haven't. Been meaning to but kinda lost interest
lol after that finale I am good .
There is no way I marathoned this show for this ending
There is no f***ing way
Lol!
I don't know why I thought this would have something more potent to say about mental health, our society, murders , fanbases and solving them or everything that I watched in 3.5 hours.
Lol!
I am beside myself . I went in low expectations too. Waited some after the true hype period. Read no reviews. avoided spoilers. Lightly popped into this thread every so often to see if people were talking about the show. People were talking twitter outrage or reaction to the show . So I was if anything like wow it must really say something .
Then I boot up VLC player marathon it and just absolutely baffled. Discussion in thread actually not hyperbole though so thats refreshing people typing paragraphs discussing not just bad or coming of christ. No talk of awards people actually talking about the content of the show and what did and didn't work for them.
Can't be mad at the discussion here. Michelle Obama snuck in vegetable jokes. Malia Obama was cooking with the pen.
End the unreliable narrator pipeline its become a excuse for s***ty writing of a character with mental health issues for far far too long. Enough is enough. The fact that we have already seen it in two shows this year
and here comes Barry
Actually no I haven't. Been meaning to but kinda lost interest
Final season was the best season

Why did you think this was gonna say anything profound about mental health?
It was a horror thriller murder series first
Why did you think this was gonna say anything profound about mental health?
It was a horror thriller murder series first
Because its about stans and fan culture. Not super profound about mental health but something more about stans than it did. S*** something more about anything than it did honestly.
Horror Thriller Murder series doesn't work for me if again no spoilers its just like no feedback mechanism. There are no stakes throughout the show really. A slasher, a scream, a dexter, a you shi any horror movie has the "what if the killer f***s up, gets investigated, etc etc". Throughout the beginning of the show even to where you are at without spoiling there is no feedback loop at all.
The most thrilling part about it is the music. Then we know every character will comically be like Naija aight , Naija overrated or wrong her in some way enough for well poof. It reached a point of predictable, going through motions or tedious for me.
Mental health is the reason given for why she is doing what she is doing throughout the show . Profound isn't even the word. Mental health to me in this case was a plot device for lazy writing. Again its my opinion. You don't even have to say anything profound just make me feel that you didn't just use mental health to write what we got.
Final season was the best season
But I will pick it back up then. Next likely shifting to refn then will double back to atlana, succession, severance and maybe better call saul.
Facts, should've been about Drake stans
lol with her Adonis thread I was like they got prime material right there . I am going to start a conspiracy that Donald Glover was going to go in then beyonce made a call
