I think a large part of why Smash DLC and even the base roster new additions for Ultimate have been so bad for me is because I have no connection to these characters and have never played their games.
Newcomers:
Inkling- Never played Splatoon
Belmonts- Never played Castlevania
Dark Samus- Just a re-skin, couldn’t tell you which Metroid game Dark Samus comes from. Likely have not play said game as I’ve only played very few Metroid games.
Daisy/Pirhana Plant- obviously I’ve played Mario games but neither of these characters are playable characters in their franchise
Ridley- have played his games but was actively against him getting in smash
K. Rool- was he in DK64? If not, I’ve never beaten a game he is in.
Dark Pit- Never played a Kid Icarus game
Chrom- Never played an FE game
Byleth- Never played an FE game
Ken- Street Fighter 2 is one of my favorite games of all time but we already had Ryu so it wasn’t a hype reveal especially since it proved the Grinch Leak wrong.
Hero- Never played a Dragon Quest game
Banjo- Never have beaten a Banjo game
Terry- Never played a SNK gameExceptions:
Incineroar- Pokemon is my 4th favorite franchise ever but I feel they picked the wrong Pokémon.
