The Mario movie is legit so much fun, that it’s frustrating to see critics label it as the worst illumination film.
While it’s not without its faults, it gets things right for a good majority of the film. The action and visuals are incredible, with a soundtrack that feels like you’re playing the game as you watch. It’s incredible how well the Mario world translated to the big screen, everything looked vibrant and colorful. There’s a handful of uses of licensed music but thankfully for the most part they fit the scenes they were used in, never overstaying their welcome or becoming the main focus of the scenes. There’s nothing like Party Rock anthem thrown in out of nowhere. The humor is great as well, feeling reminiscent of the recent puss in boots rather than minions, using the environment to their advantage for fun visual gags or slapstick. The story itself wasn’t bad either, while it’s not creating a brand new story it still throws the Mario tropes on their head and even the third act threw me for a surprise. The voice acting was great as well, everyone for their roles and Chris Pratt really surprised me
The only major negative was the pacing. It is break neck paced and once the mushroom kingdom is introduced, you’re pretty much on a fast road to the ending. It’s strange though, as I feel if it was padded up that would leave time to make it boring like other illumination films, and I’m not exactly sure what they could’ve spent more time on, since it is so fast paced there isn’t really anything that isn’t contributing to keeping the story moving. Still though, it definitely needed times to breathe.
Like I said before, it’s easily Illuminations best film, and if it wasn’t for the pacing, I’d be absolutely in love with the film. But as it stands I just really really like it
7.5-8/10
agreed on all fronts, licensed music was used in a tasteful way and the quick pacing def hurt the movie. i feel like the sequel will be a lot better for sure
confirmed classic
more thoughts after sleeping on it
Visuals: 9/10, all the action (especially in the last 3rd of the movie) and set pieces were great. loved the platforming elements.
World design: 10/10. perfection
story: 6/10, maybe a 5/10. critics aren’t wrong it’s thin. mario and luigi could've been fleshed out more. felt like they had a great skeleton/foundation written for them and just stuck with the first draft.
also the pacing is a big issue. like Ava said it needed room to breathe. Up until DK’s kingdom the pacing is pretty good and then it goes breakneck fast till the end
comedy: 8/10. wasn't expecting to laugh as much as i did. audience was cracking up too.
music: 7/10 pretty good. the music that played during the credits was phenomenal tho wish those songs were played throughout the movie instead.
overall i fw it and would watch it again. surprised it’s reviewing this badly since it’s probably the best video game-to-movie translation hands down.
so its a classic im hearing

Ya'll need to accept that Hollywood will never make a perfect movie adaptation of video games lol
MGS movie incoming
If I didn’t even f*** with Puss in Boots, there’s no way this is gonna do anything for me lol
They cooking!
I’m in vip with a fishbowl cocktail about to head into this movie.
will give ktt2 my first ever review right after
honestly, I left the theatre with such joy.
I expected the story line to be basic, but at the same time I loved how they spun the narrative towards saving Luigi and not Peach
I loved how they made Mario who he was which explains a lot about the Chris Pratt choice and then made him even more relatable.
They packed a lot in this film, so I can see why it’s seen as a constant montage of some kind. but the film is aware of itself, and provides you with detail that made you love the game in the first place.
The colours, humour, the design and the action were all lovely. a super cute film. yes, filled with the cliches you would expect but I’m not mad at this because kids are going to leave this movie thinking this film/game is the coolest.
and that’s this film in its core
I would have liked to have seen more luigi (but not mad because someone in the story would have been sacrificed in this story)
Overall, a great experience and I look forward to watching it again
8.5/10
Ktt2 classic looks like I’m afraid

Jack black destroyed it, he was beyond kino, Chris Pratt was awesome too. Trailers just weren't good, but honestly don't know why I doubted him after Emmet being so kino
