As a video game adaption they knocked it out of the park

In the training course and DK fight scenes I found myself thinking “holy s***, these niggas really nailed it.” Like dawg I wish Sonic didn’t go live action and went this route. Really cool that Nintendo/Illumination weren’t embarrassed or shy away from the source material and embraced it all the way.

In terms of voice acting, I thought everyone did a good job. Chris Pratt did a good job. Not even just serviceable, like he actually did his thing. Jack Black, Seth Rogan, and Anya were the standouts though.

Story wise the reviews weren’t wrong, it’s pretty thin. They could’ve done more to establish and up the stakes. Bowser does make up for it when it becomes clear what his goal is but for the most part the conflict could’ve been better. Also the dynamic between Mario & Luigi and Mario’s emotional arc could’ve been fleshed out way more.

Overall i enjoyed it a lot but no doubt could’ve definitely been better. There’s a brief tease for the sequel that shows up in the halfway point of the movie that’s got me hyped.

Also I can see this movie being a smash hit with general audiences. I feel like there’s going to be a big disconnect between reviewers and general audiences with this one. Jokes were landing like crazy in my showing. Everyone in my theater were laughing their asses off. Niggas even clapped at the end
