Natalie Portman always has really nice outfits in these movies. I didn't know where to say it I'll just say generally I like her outfits.

I also like Anakin's black outfit in the third movie and the contrast between his black outfit and Obi-Wan's white outfit. Obvious but effective.

My friend and I just watched the prequels. First time for me.

    The Phantom Menace

    ☆☆

    "There's always a bigger fish"

This is the only bad film in the trilogy. Most obvious takeaways were child Anakin who wasn't good and Jar-Jar Binks who was funny for about a minute, annoying after that.

I think the biggest problem is the script. This being the first prequel I watched, really surprised me with how bad the dialogue and acting feels even with the adult actors. It feels like theater kids trying to do banter and say cheesy action movie lines.

The highlights of the movie are the pod racing scene (it was a little too long but mostly fun) and anything with Darth Maul (who I assume is the phantom menace? I don't know), he just looked cool and menacing the entire time. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon's fight with him is one of my favorites.

The funniest thing is during this fight we see one of the ugliest movie scenes with the Jar-Jars vs droids fight. All the CGI in this movie looks really fake and this is the worst offender.

Overall it's a bad movie. Most of the plot revolves around them finding Anakin and space politics. So the bulk of the plot is boring. It wasn't funny like they hoped not even in a "so bad it's good" way.

    Phantom menace is palps

    or darth jar jar 👀👀👀

They barely had him in the movie tho. I would love Darth Jar-Jar btw he would be like dark Goofy.

    Attack On The Clones

    ☆☆☆

"I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere."

First thought is that the title is very misleading. It's not really an action movie as I felt like most of the movie was about Anakin and Padme's love story which is... okay.

I don't think Hayden Christensen is such a bad lead. I enjoyed him here and in the next movie. Sure he acts awkward but so does everyone else because of the direction and script. He's a good little edgy boy.

The problem with Anakin and Padme is that you can't really tell WHY they're in love except for plot reasons... Okay they met as children and he fell in love with her because she's a girl princess. What does she like in him? What do they find in each other after that initial crush? An excuse one could make is that in the Star Wars universe love is different and doesn't need to be explored that deeply. But since it's a romantic movie you'd want your audience to relate to the movie but they can't.

The movie picks up in the last 30 minutes where there's an actual attack of the clones (and a funny C-3PO scene, I like him so I enjoyed the silly scene). I actually forgot the time line but Anakin and Padme's scene on Nabu is good and the one where he tells her he killed all the sand people is good. The rest of the movie is just okay.

More thoughts is I enjoyed Ewan McGregor and Christopher Lee in their roles. Yoda jumping around and doing flips is always fun to see. He's so smol!

Just some tidbits. AOTC is based on noir mysteries with Blade Runner influences during the Coruscant scenes being the most apparent. Also, the movie has a lot of overt references to the 1950s down to the title "Attack of the Clones." and the diner Obi-Wan visits. Not to mention Geonosisis influenced by Mars, which was a popular setting for sci fi movies. The title is also a subversion of sorts. Before Episode 2, everyone had the idea that the clones of the Clone Wars would be the bad guys of the conflict. So, the "twist" that the clones were actually the good guys was sort of a shock in that sense. Timothy Zahn, a famous SW author, said he was "wonderfully blindsided" by the idea that the clones helped the Republic.

I think the idea of Anakin and Padme's romance is that they are both supposed to be aromantic in their duties. Padme is supposed to put her duty above herself and Anakin is supposed to do the same. But they both allow each other to "be themselves" in a way. In TPM, we never see Padme in a personal way, unlike in AOTC where she sheds that political persona and allows the audience and Anakin to see her in a new light. Padme probably sees the same in Anakin. He's not the stoic Jedi, for better or worse, that she is used to.

    Those are my thoughts

I'm indifferent towards the clone war. It had a few cool scenes but imo the Darth Maul scene and any other fight scene in ROTS were better.

Edit: I just remembered the scene where they're in the arena. That one was pretty cool but that's because it's character focused and not clone focused.

It's cool that it's based on noir mysteries but I couldn't really tell as a viewer. If after watching you asked me what was the mystery I couldn't tell you.

As for the romantic story, I'm okay with it. It's cute and it's nice to see them "break the rules" and act natural.

The problem is we don't get to see too much of their personalities and why exactly they love each other this much. All the movies do is tell us how much of a strong bond these two have but they don't show enough of it. (It's very surface level).

Even Anakin's relationship with Obi-Wan was more fleshed out. (I realize that one was more important thematically, but Padme is allegedly the reason he goes dark).

Darth jar jar would've been nuts. It would have caught everyone by surprise, and in a way, redeem TPM.

I think it would've been hilarious but the Jar-Jar reception was so negative I think they made the right call with just making him a background character in the other movies.

A Darth Jar-Jar fanfic would be cool tho.

“I felt disappointed by Star Wars that my character was killed. And, actually, in the script, she wasn’t killed. It happened during filming. And it was much more just to do with the time we had to do the scenes. It’s much easier just to have me die than it is to have me fall into a vacuum of space so I can come back sometime.

That’s what it originally was: that the explosion and she falls out and you don’t know where she’s gone. So I could have come back at some point. But when we came to filming, as far as I was concerned and was aware, when it came to filming that scene, it was too huge a set-piece to create, so they just had me blow up and I’m done. But I remembered at the time thinking, ‘This is a big, big mistake’ — not because of me, not because I wanted to come back. You don’t kill off the first Black woman to ever have a real role in a Star Wars movie. Like, are you f***ing joking?”

Never really cared about Solo tbh, but they could at least have made a show about Qi'ra to see what happened right after the end.

I've only enjoyed Ep. 7 and Rogue One recently
