that top 5 is wild
scorpion was huge
scorpion drakes biggest album in usa tbh
why do people get so annoyed about a label marketing their artist well lmao, like "this song is popular because of the label pushing it" and...? is that not the job of a music label?
as long as they aren't pretending that their come up is indie (this person is a disney star ffs), it shouldn't be a problem

I think that the issue is when people feel like songs popularity is less the result of true popularity and more the result of how much or how little backing it has
To me a label shouldn’t be able to directly impact song plays like they can through paying for radio or paying for playlisting
They should be able to promote the song but not in a way where that promotion is lending itself to falsely inflating the popularity of the song
Just listened, that bridge is real nice
Not sure I'll ever listen to this again tho
this is all it takes to make papi's angels shook
we unfazed 😌
drake has most records sold in usa out of anyone
This is pretty interesting lol. Ok after mulling this over in a few posts in the sales thread, looking at the bad playlisting, I think I got it:
Debut single for a beloved Disney+ actress - guaranteed listens from the excitement over this off the bat, not unlike previous debut singles of past beloved Disney actresses, except now we’re in the streaming era
A juicy narrative surrounding it on some Cry Me a River s*** - we’ve seen time and time again how many streams a song with a juicy narrative surrounding it gets right away, hell we saw it with WAP
Don’t be confused by this song not being super catchy like a typical #1 or the lack of wide demographics listening to it; the above points are enough to make up for that given its appeal to its tiktok audience, ESPECIALLY since the song is being genuinely enjoyed on top of it

Mass marketing from music labels is cynical af. It effectively reduces the artists into money making printers for business men. It's nothing to cheer for even if it's your favourite artist or they break records or whatever.
There is a reason music plants and artists that get insane label backing are always young people. They don't understand what's going on.
Disney has done this with so many actors and labels with endless musicians.
I don't know if this is what happened to this girl. But there is legitimate criticism for labels pushing their artists like crazy (it's never because they care about the artist they push).

that's payola though, which goes beyond marketing

Labels are suppose to promote/fund the artists not inflate songs & warp public perception or lock down chart positions through unfair tactics
We’ve literally seen what bundling did to chart data & music just last year

also the fact the she's a huge Taylor Swift stan and has had support from Swift which has led to Swifts fans supporting her cos she's "one of them"

sure but I think that a lot of the cynicism about label push comes from it being lumped in w pure payola
