I ain’t saying beat your kids for every mistake they make. I probably got 5 whoopins in my life and it was only when I did some really stupid/bad s*** and it taught me to never do those things again. Some parents get off on spanking they kids for every goddamn thing which is terrible, most things can be fixed with a stern talking to letting the kid know what’s right and what’s wrong, but some parents let their kids run wild and let them disrespect everybody their whole life with no consequences and that lack of discipline creates some horribly arrogant and hateful people. All in all I’m not spanking my kids unless they do some really bad s*** that they knew was wrong and need to know there’s consequences for bad behavior

I watched one my by best friends disrespect his parents his entire life and get away with everything he did. He’s been an alcoholic since like 14 years old and has had multiple d*** problems. S***s really sad, he’s not a bad guy he’s just never had a good role model. His moms a drunk and his dads been struggling with heroin abuse forever. My boy has had so many good opportunities from other family members and has ruined them all because he just doesn’t have it in him to give a f***, he’s now 26 unemployed living with his mom spending all of his unemployment money on tattoos, booze and coke. Our friend group tries to help him out but he just doesn’t care and I don’t think he ever will until his support system drops him. If his parents didn’t fail him and gave him the discipline he needed he wouldn’t be so far gone but we worry about dude

There's way too much subjectivity in regards to what "spanking" or 'beating" a kid really means. Also, what type of action by the child that leads to corporal punishment matters in development. I hate vague discussions like this because this type of discussion requires specifics.

People acting like spanking the end all be all on if a kid gonna stay on a nice path and generally behave. It's a lot more than go into raising a kid than how you punish them for misbehaving

Spanking is seldom about just discipline alone, but also a method that a parent could use to express their frustration.

Thing is the example your parents set for you in my opinion will always have a 100% bigger impact into your behaviour than how they punish you. Kids aren't dogs, they learn by what they see more than anything.

My parents are quiet religious people who I've never heard even curse, and as a result they rarely ever had to even punish me. I was always terrified of doing something bad not because of the fear of punishment but because of the shame of disappointing them

Obviously I'm very fortunate in that respect. And my parents are lucky too as obviously people don't really choose to have problems that they pass onto their kids. I will say tho that my grandpops used to get beat with a belt by his dad pretty bad, and as a result, he never ever laid a finger on my mom or my uncle because he had such bad memories from it.

I do think though that you can be strict parents without resorting to spanking, and I've always been uneasy with the association between teaching your kid that when you're angry about something, hitting is an acceptable response. I think if you are going to spank on occasion, you really have to make sure that it's being done out of discipline, and not anger and it should be super rare and only done for the most serious thing. Something that's sad and regrettable that hurts you as much as your kid
